Dan Aykroyd Blames Director Paul Feig For ‘Ghostbusters’ Costly Reboot

Ghostbusters Stars Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and Kate McKinnon

Last year, a new all-female reboot of Ghostbusters hit theaters. Though it grossed $229 million worldwide at the box office, that was off of a $144 million production budget. So adding the millions that was put into the marketing campaign, the film was barely a mild success. Thus, there will probably be no sequel. The film was fine, and with the way it ended, there was plenty of stories left to tell. But it all comes down to money, and if there isn’t any, then it isn’t worth it for the studio to take such a risk.

Now one of the Ghostbusters alum believes he knows why the reboot didn’t work. According to Dan Aykroyd, it was director Paul Feig. More on the story, below.

Aykroyd threw some serious shade at the director while on the British cooking/interview show Sunday Brunch. When asked about last year’s Ghostbusters, Aykroyd said it was Feig’s unwillingness to accept help that was a problem on set, which led up to what happened. Here’s the tweet.

Based on the video above, Aykroyd was happy with the final product. But it all comes down to cost. And it simply cost too much for Sony Pictures. Obviously, studios don’t like to lose money. However, the studio ordered some reshoots either to fix some of the dialogue or make it lean towards the action-driven scenes. And during that time, it appears that Feig was unwilling to take some advice from those who knew the material well.

We shouldn’t place a 100 percent of the blame on one person, though. There are plenty of people to blame and one shouldn’t get more than the other. In my opinion, the film put too much emphasis on visuals and action set pieces. It also relied to much on winking and nodding to the original film. As a result, a lot of the character development and original storytelling suffered. The jokes and humor hit all the right notes, it just should have focused more on that than trying to be a mega blockbuster before it could actually be one.

So, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next. But it’s pretty clear by the lack of development, there won’t be a sequel happening any time soon.
