Cowboy Bebop

Well, here we go again. Another beloved anime getting the live-action treatment. It’s not as though it’s never been done before. But these live-action animes don’t exactly have the best track record either.

So when it was announced that Cowboy Bebop is getting turned into a live-action series, it does raise a few red flags. More on the story below.

Variety says the live-action television series by Tomorrow Studios, a partnership between ITV Studios and Marty Adelstein. Sunset Inc. “” the studio responsible for the original animated iteration “” will act as executive producers. Chris Yost will write the adaptation.

Now for those who aren’t familiar with the original anime, Cowboy Bebop follows a band of misfit bounty hunters composed of Spike Spiegel, defected assassin; Jet Black, a former cop; Faye Valentine, a beautiful gambling addict with an unpleasant disposition who was under a cryogenic sleep for 40 years; Ed, a wacky hacker; and Ein, a Corgi whose intelligence was greatly enhanced by a research facility. Together they capture bounties, but most of the time they end up empty-handed and are double-crossing each other every chance they get. And yet, they still end up working together in the end.

Yost has been behind animated series such as The Batman and Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. He also worked on the scripts for Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok, and is in the midst of penning Black and Silver, the new Black Cat and Silver Sable Spider-Man spinoff, which will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.

This live-action Cowboy Bebop will be a tough sell though. Given the history of live-action animes, it’s hard to say if fans of the original and animes will be on board for this. Especially this. Cowboy Bebop is a universally loved anime that has that perfect combination of storytelling, action, drama, and music. The space opera infuses jazz music in a futuristic setting while also alluding to old western films and kung-fu fight choreography.

Still, it’s way too early to say if this will be a hit or a miss. It was just announced, after all. So let’s give everyone involved the benefit of the doubt that the film can work. Of course, we will keep you up to date on the progress of the development. Just tell us what you think of the announcement in the comments below.
