Warning! Spoilers below for tonight’s 2-part season 3 finale of Gotham!

Last week on Gotham, the shaman (Raymond J Barry) killed the entire Court of Owls. Ed, Tabitha, Butch and Barbara (Cory Michael Smith, Jessica Lucas, Drew Powell, Erin Richards) captured Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), but Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett-Smith) came and stole him away. Lee buried Jim (Morena Baccharin, Ben McKenzie) alive and his only way out was to take the Tetch virus. He He didn’t want to, but does to try and save the city from the bomb. They are too late. Alfred (Sean Pertwee) tried to talk Bruce (David Mazouz) down from pushing the virus button, but the shaman did it and Alfred killed him. The bomb went off.

Spoilers below.

Gotham 3.21 “Heroes Rise: Destiny Calling” & 3.22 “Heroes Rise: Heavydirtysoul” (Finale) review: The city is in total chaos. A train on fire screeches by, people are beating others, some are bloody… total anarchy.

Jim is trying to rein it in when Harvey (Donal Logue) asks for his gun, “I can control this.” He hands it over, telling him that Lee is waiting for Jim to give in. Lee calls Jim, “Listen to the whispers.” He’s fighting the “killer” inside.

Bruce is in an interrogation room, a worried Alfred looking on. He tries to get through to him.

Lucius Fox (Chris Chalk) thinks that Strange (BD Wong) made an antidote. Jim goes searching for him because he knows Strange is trying to head out of town. He’s right, but Fish grabs him at the train station. She wants Strange to help her own the city.

Barbara and Nygma make a deal. If he helps her win the city, she’ll help him kill Penguin. This is a pretty pathetic city to own if you ask me.

Jim and Harvey catch up to Fish, demanding Strange back, but she sics her secret weapon, Victor Fries (Nathan Darrow) on them. Everyone evil is delighted that Jim’s dark side is out (except Jim).

Butch and Tabitha discuss an exit plan. Lee visits the club. When Butch laughs at her verbal jabs, she shows him that she is nothing to laugh at and throws him across the room. She tells Tabitha that she’s gunning for Barbara.

Alfred tries to get into Bruce’s head, but it’s not working. “That man lied to you.” Bruce says the shaman helped him, “More than you ever did!” Someone else is coming. He starts to get through, but the GCPD is bananas, and Bruce slips out. Alfred starts tracking him. He goes to a door and enters. He finds the Demon’s Head… Ra’s al Ghul (Alexander Siddig).

Strange leads them to the cure and hands it to Fish. She promises Penguin that Nygma and “all those who tried to stand in our way” will die. The Talons show up and start a massacre. Bullock and Jim are on their way. Jim joins the fight and accidentally sticks a sword through Fish. The cure breaks, and she dies in Penguin’s arms, all forgiven between them. Jim starts choking Penguin and Harvey knocks him out. Strange says he can make more, he just needs one thing… The Mad Hatter, which the Nygma gang steals.

The first test – Bruce has to kill Alfred. After a loving speech from Alfred, we think it’s going to be okay. And then Bruce sticks the sword straight through Alfred.

The next episode starts with Bruce zapped out of his brainwashing, grieving Alfred, and screaming he will never join Ra’s al Ghul. He disappears but tells Bruce to use the water. Alfred is resurrected via the Lazarus Pit, but still critical. Bruce is distraught and drives a visiting Selina (Camren Bicondova) away once again. Come on, Bruce!

Lee calls Jim and tells him to meet her to run away together and he agrees. He wants to lure Nygma with the thought of Penguin. They talk on the phone while Butch tries to convince Tabitha to turn on Barbara. It works, but it’s too late. Barbara figures it out and shoots him between the eyes. Her and Tabitha fight, then kiss, then fight again. But Tabitha wins and Barbara dies, electrocuted. Selina goes to Tabitha looking for a path. They bond over her whip.

Jim and Harvey drag Penguin to meet with Nygma and Tetch, but Barbara shows up and there is a fun little showdown. Penguin knocks out and steals Ed. Jim slices Tetch and steals his blood. They only rush one antidote, but Jim wants to give it to Lee. She crushes it in an instant. When they are about to get on the train, Bullock comes running to save his one true love Jim.

“You’re the best cop I ever worked with. The best friend I ever had… go save her.” Gordon injects her and then him.

Lee leaves a “Dear Jim” letter behind, and narrates what Gotham is really all about.

Is Butch really alive? He’s Cyrus Gold?

A couple and a young girl walk down a familiar dark alley. A man with a gun appears. A caped shadow knocks him out. We see Bruce Wayne on top of a roof, unmasked. He’s Batman!

Both episodes were soooo crazy! They killed 4-5 characters (it’s approximate). Barbara – dead. Fish – dead. Butch – dead (?). Nygma – frozen dead but in stasis (we think). Alfred – dead but resurrected. I yelled and gasped at each shocker. And shocked I was. They were killing everyone. Even though the show easily brings people back to life, they really looked “sincerely dead.”

Bruce’s journey this season (and the series) has been my favorite part. He is Batman now. Alfred recounting his love for baby Bruce made me cry and really cemented their return to each other. Although I’m mad at Bruce for his treatment of Selina (and her inevitable turn to full villain), it is true that you have to stick to family… and they are a family.

Nygma and Barbara really had their destruction coming. They are both fun as hell, but they were just so mean… Penguin shows his complexity through his emotions, while Ed is cold and crazy. I love Fish Mooney, and although I knew her return was temporary, I was hoping for a reprieve.

Good resolution to the virus story – the use of Jim’s badge as the carrier for his cure was great storytelling. I was hoping for a Lee and Barbara catfight, but the Tabitha and Barbara one was decent enough, especially with the kissing.

Loved the season, loved the finale, and love that we have much to look forward to with Ra’s al Ghul, Cyrus Gold, Penguin and the Freaks, and Batman!

See you in season 4!
