New ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ Images Spread Some Musical Cheer
  |  @   |

P.L. Travers may not have been a fan of her Marry Poppins novels being turned into a film, but Disney’s Mary Poppins has left behind a legacy that makes the adaptation one of the greatest Disney films of all time. It has been 53 years since the release of the musical, and now, in a day and age where sequels are the norm, Disney is following up Mary Poppins with Mary Poppins Returns, starring Emily Blunt as the title character.

It will be a while before we see anything substantial, but the film does come out this year, leaving a few wondering when we will see anything. Well, after the studio dropped that teaser photo a few months back, three new images have popped online. Check it out below.

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we are getting a better look at what director Rob Marshall has in store for us. The film takes place 25 years after the original where a grown-up Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) is now an artist and banker, while Jane Banks (Emily Mortimer) is now a union organizer. But the sudden death of Michael leaves that Banks family reeling, and it is up to Mary Poppins (Blunt) to bring Michael’s children Annabel (Pixie Davies), Georgie (Joel Dawson), and John (Nathanael Saleh), together and find the light they have lost. The film also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury, Julie Walters, and Colin Firth.

These new images give us a look at some of the big musical numbers we can expect to see in the film, plus some behind the scenes photos of rehearsals and Marshall at work.

The film will feature an all-new score by composer Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

Marshall is no stranger to Walt Disney Studios. He directed both Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and the musical adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway musical Into The Woods. He was also behind the lens on Chicago, Memoirs Of A Geisha, and Annie.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Mary Poppins Returns is set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books. In the story, Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane (Emily Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Julie Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Meryl Streep).

Mary Poppins Returns opens in theaters on December 25, 2018.
