‘Baby Driver’ Featurette: How Edgar Wright Weaves Music Into His New Film
  |  @   |

We’ve known for a long time, a very long time, that music plays a big part in Edgar Wright‘s Baby Driver. Ansel Elgort plays Baby, a getaway driver who suffers a constant ringing in his ears, and uses the music from the cars he steals to drown it out. But it is how Wright incorporates the music into every scene that has made it one of the best-reviewed films of the year.

Earlier last week, the tracklist for the soundtrack revealed an eclectic mix of genres and eras, but we’ve only heard a few songs in trailers and TV spots. Now a new featurette shows just how music works in Baby Driver. Check out the featurette, below.

In the featurette, Jamie Foxx says the music compliments everything in Baby Driver. And by everything, he means everything. It is synced to any movement, gesture, and sound. According to Elgort, the film was written around the soundtrack, with Jon Hamm adding that the script came with the music in a little tiny thumb drive.

Baby Driver all started when Wright listened to “Bellbottoms” by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. The song’s two-minute build was a huge inspiration to the actual film. So in the script, whatever was happening in the song was happening on the road. Hamm says these characters live in world of heightened musical reality. That alone sounds absolutely fantastic and makes me want to see the film even more.

Also starring is Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jon Bernthal, and Eiza González.

Here’s the film’s official plot synopsis:

A talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.

Baby Driver opens in theaters on June 28, 2017.
