Preacher‘s second season on AMC is NOT wasting time with two episodes in two nights. The opening ten minutes of Sunday night’s premiere was just awesome, combining all the elements that Preacher fans have come to expect; quick witted dialogue, hellacious and gory violence, and screwball comedy. Jesse (Dominic Cooper), Tulip (Ruth Negga) and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) are on the road searching for God. Meanwhile the Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish) is searching for them, and he’s leaving no stone unturned. The trio ended up in a fleabag motel and in a touching moment, Jesse literally broke down the door for Tulip. But alas, you can’t relax for long when you’re being stalked by a cowboy from Hell.

WARNING: Spoilers for Episode 2.2 of Preacher….

Two episodes… two nights, and two consecutive jaw dropping beginnings. Here the Saint finds the motel where Jesse and the gang are staying. There’s a crazy car crash, a gun aficionado group firing away after Jesse compels them with Genesis, and the Saint getting very, frighteningly angry and wiping out the ENTIRE motel! McTavish in just a few moments on screen gives off such an amazing aura. His appearance reminds me of how the WWE portrayed the Undertaker during his run. Except imagine that with Dirty Harry magnums blowing limbs off people.

Cassidy thinks he has the answer to what the cowboy is; the Terminator. Then gets another idea from a late night commercial he saw. We then get a great montage of cast out angel Fiore (Tom Brooke) catching a ride to the titular Mumbai Sky Tower casino, where his ability to automatically reincarnate upon death comes in handy when he joins the lounge act of Frank Patel (Vik Sahay), and soon becomes the Amazing Ganesh The gimmick feels inspired from one of my favorite Tales From the Crypt episodes, where Fiore has Patel literally kill him nightly to cheering fans, only for him to calmly resurface seconds later to a raucous crowd.

Jesse, Cass, and Tulip show up to see Fiore and find out about the cowboy. Fiore confesses to hiring the Saint to destroy Genesis, and more, doesn’t give a sh*t anymore what happens. Jesse finds out that the Saint is tracking his Genesis power and Cassidy wants to find a different approach to getting Fiore to help, one that will take exactly 2-hours and 45-minutes. Back while Jesse was running from the Saint at the motel, Tulip finally saw on the news about the total destruction of Annville, and the realization that the only family she had, drunk or indifferent are gone, hits her hard. Jesse suggests hitting the tables. She suggests getting a room. This leads to an awkward but sweet proposal.

Cassidy’s plan… a near three hour drug rager in Fiore’s suite. This show just somehow continues to up the ante. This is FOUR “call your friends” scenes in the first episode and a half of the season. It should come as no surprise based on who the directors are that they managed to outdo themselves when it comes to drug fueled comedy. While Cassidy and Fiore snort coke from the jacuzzi, a man from Tulip’s past shows up to interrupt her potential casino chapel wedding.

In the end, Jesse figures out that God likes jazz, the only logical place down south for him to go is New Orleans. Fiore makes one last deal with the Saint of Killers, Tulip fears that New Orleans will stir up even more of her past, and the gang moves on with the Saint behind them.

After these two episodes, I have to start pondering a question I never thought I’d think about; are Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen geniuses? Seriously, go and look at the films they have produced, written, and directed. They are the MASTERS of the scatalogical comedy. Between their work on Superbad, Pineapple Express, This is the End, The Night Before, Sausage Party, you name it; these are not just one note stoner comedies, but rather insightful, intelligent, and hilarious to the point of inducing tears from your eyes and drips down your pants. On Preacher they take all the frenetic pacing and ridiculously bonkers comedy, and manage to squeeze in some absolutely fantastic action sequences and gore. It’s taken me nearly Cassidy’s 2 hours and 45 minutes to watch the two episodes because I keep pausing and rewinding to make sure I really just saw what I just saw.

If you can’t tell I love the show, and strongly recommend you begin watching immediately, then I’ll cut to chase and say “Yep, it’s darn good, go watch.” As much as a I loved season 1, I honestly did not think any show would outdo Legion as my show of the year for 2017, but two episodes in and Preacher is running the inside track.

Preacher returns to AMC next Monday night at 10:00pm ET.
