‘The Batman’ Will Be A Noir Detective DC Film

Batman goes by many names, but none as intellectually imposing as The World’s Greatest Detective. Sure he may have gizmos and gadgets at his disposal, and a lot of it helps him discover clues about the criminal underworld. But we really haven’t seen a film where those same detective skills are at the forefront of the character.

However, it appears that director Matt Reeves wants to bring a noir style to the world of The Batman. Pull down those Venetian blinds, and read more about what Reeves has planned for the Caped Crusader.

While on the press tour for War for the Planet of the Apes, Reeves described his take on The Batman:

“In all of [my] films, what I try to do, in an almost Hitchcockian sense, is use the camera and use the storytelling so that you become that character, and you emphasize with that point of view. There’s a chance to do an almost noir-driven detective version of Batman that is point-of-view driven in a very, very powerful way, that will hopefully connect you to what’s going on inside of his head and inside of his heart.”

That noir sense of style certainly works for a character like Batman, who has been called The World’s Greatest Detective from time to time. Fans can recall seeing nods to film noir in Batman: The Animated Series. Though the idea of what constitutes as noir has changed throughout the years, it still remains a Hollywood crime drama. So you can probably expect hyper-violence while also staying true to the idea of a character struggling with his/her moral compass.

Which is one thing that Batman has had to come to terms with time and time again. Acting as an agent of justice and not pure impulses. Something which was hinted at during Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, where we see Wayne keep a mangled Robin suit, which serves as a constant reminder for him.

It should be interesting to see how this all turns out. What will be more interesting is to see if writers Ben Affleck and Geoff Johns decide to go with an original story or adapt one of the character’s iconic detective stories for the film.

The Batman still has no release date. But we’ll keep you posted should one be announced – hopefully by San Diego Comic-Con the earliest.
