Matt Reeves Already Envisioning ‘The Batman’ As A Trilogy

Since WB has brought in War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves to helm The Batman, fans have been excited about the prospect of him bringing a detective noir aspect to Gotham City.

As cool as that sounds, the director is hoping to make The Batman his trilogy. But he also realizes that it is a very ambitious idea. Check out what he had to say about it below.

Speaking to Fandango, Reeves talked about how his approach to building the Planet of the Apes reboot will be similar with Batman:

“When [screenwriter] Mark [Bomback] and I began [Dawn of the Planet of the Apes], we knew what our goals were, but we didn’t know how we were gonna get there, and I would say that more relates to the way that I see a Batman story, is a kind of ambition for a series of stories, but really the most important thing is gonna be to tell a vital first story.”

Reeves has garnered praise since bringing up the idea that he wants to make this a detective noir film. It’s certainly something that was never really addressed in any of the previous films. Plus it would help it stand out from the other DCEU films. It’s a similar idea to what Marvel Studios is doing with the MCU. So to make Batman live up to “The World’s Greatest Detective” name would be very exciting.

But before he can launch that promising trilogy, Reeves stresses that it all begins with a good story:

“I have ideas about an arc, but really, the important thing is just to start “¦ you have to start with one. You know, you have to start with a story that begins something.”

While it’s good to have ambition, Reeves realizes that he faces an uphill battle. I imagine that if the film takes off, WB would be more than willing to give the director the keys to a trilogy. However, it’s still not clear how long Affleck is signed on to play Batman. The actor was rumored to be tired of playing the character. And who could blame him with the poor box office numbers for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, and the constant questions about The Batman during press junkets. One has to imagine he would grow even more frustrated if Justice League fails to meet expectations. But if that doesn’t happen, and if The Batman is a success, it might give Affleck the incentive he needs to see the DCEU to the end of his contract.

Reeves also just talked about the last director to take on a trilogy of Batman movies, Christopher Nolan. You can click here to read what he had to say.
