War for the Planet of the Apes: Revelations
The Official Movie Prequel
By Greg Keyes
Paperback | Kindle | Audio CD
Publisher: Titan Books
Release date: June 6, 2017

In 2011, FOX’s successfully rebooted the Planet of the Apes film franchise with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which centered on Caesar, a genetically enhanced chimpanzee born in an animal-testing lab whose early life is spent with a human family. Excellently mo-cap performed by Lord Of The Rings star Andy Serkis, Caesar struggled to find his place amongst humans, and then eventually landed in an abusive animal shelter before leading a revolt of his fellow apes against their human handlers. In 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the sequel set ten years after the events of Rise, the human race had been nearly wiped out by a virus that in turn made the apes more intelligent. Here, Caesar tried to keep the peace between his ape tribe and the human survivors, but it became clear that war was coming. Which brings us to the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes.

This week sees the theatrical release of the third installment, where Caesar and his ape clan must deal with the fall-out from the hostile takeover by human-hating ape Koba. It’s five years after Dawn and Caesar has been trying to make peace with the humans, who are now led by Colonel McCullough (Woody Harrelson), and aided by some unexpected new allies.

As was done for Dawn, Titan Books has released a prequel novel to bridge the gab between the new film and its predecessor. War for the Planet of the Apes: Revelations, by Greg Keyes (who also wrote the Dawn prequel novel Firestorm), picks up immediately after the events of Dawn. In this prequel story, Caesar is regrouping his fellow apes as his son, Blue Eyes, sets out to find a more suitable home for them. Koba has gathered his own followers, while we learn more about the mysterious Colonel McCullough. We also get a more in depth look at some of the other apes, such as the albino Winter; young orangutan Ray, who goes accompanies Blue Eyes on his quest; and Caesar’s mate Cornelia, as well as scenes with McCullough’s young soldier son John, and more.

Much like with Firestorm, with Revelations Keyes not only fills the back story of this battle between humans and apes, but really takes us into the heart of the apes’ world. For fans of the new Apes films, these prequel novels are a must, but even the casual viewer can appreciate all the novel has to offer.

War for the Planet of the Apes: Revelations releases in theaters on July 14, 2017; Revelations is available now.

Driven from their woodland home, Caesar and his apes are still recovering from the takeover by renegade ape Koba. Caesar is desperate to avoid war with the humans, but this is a faint hope, as his enemies are about to receive military reinforcements headed by the ruthless Colonel McCullough.
