While Affleck and Geoff Johns have been putting the script together for the past few years, it appears that Reeves wants to start anew. Check out what he had to say below.
Reeves was on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast to promote the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes when the question about The Batman came up. He then confirmed that the film would be getting a new script:
“No, it’s a new story. It’s just starting again. I’m excited about it. I think it’s going to be really cool.”
It’s still not clear what the plot of would have been, but Reeves has hinted at the film going in a different direction when he said he would like bring a detective noir style to the world.
This is obviously going to change what we knew about the first Batman film of the DCEU – even though we knew very little about it to begin with. During the early stages of production for Justice League, Affleck revealed test footage of Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke. At the time it was thought that it was a cameo scene that would lead into The Batman. However, with Zach Snyderstepping away as director for personal reasons, with Joss Whedon taking his place, and Reeves’ recent hire, it seems those plans have changed, and the likelihood of Deathstroke appearing as the lead villain is slim.
But there is some good news. San Diego Comic-Con is just around the corner, and we will probably learn more about The Batman by then. Also, the film has no release date as of yet, so this gives Reeves some time to work on the script with Affleck and Johns. So it should be interesting to see what will be revealed at the WB panel, which never fails to deliver.
