D23 Expo 2017: ‘Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2’

Wreck-It Ralph 2 image

We haven’t seen much from Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 since the first teaser image was released a few months back, but we knew that Ralph would be hitting the Internet superhighway. At least that’s based on the parody websites that we saw in the background of that teaser image. But now we are getting to know a little bit more about the film and how a coin-op arcade character will adapt to a cyber world full of “which princess are you?” quizzes, gifs, and online shopping. As if winning a good guy medal wasn’t already hard enough for a bad guy. See below for more on what we learned about the film on Friday at this year’s D23 Expo.

It really wouldn’t be much of a presentation of the sequel without the hilarious John C. Reilly or directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston talking about the sequel. Moore returns after spending some time directing the Academy Award-winning film Zootopia, while Johnston has been promoted from writer of the first Wreck-It Ralph to director of Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2.

In Wreck-It Ralph 2, the arcade goes wifi, which gives our characters the access they need to travel the web. In the sequel, Vanellope’s Sugar Rush is in desperate need of a part, and they run the risk of being carted off if that part is not replaced. So Vanellope and Ralph hit the web to find it. There, it feels like a futursitic world where pop-up ads show up out of nowhere (think a Disney-ifed version of those ads you saw in Minority Report). A lot of these ads are just clickbait articles.

One of the newest characters to be introduced to the film is Yesss (yup, three Ss). As an algorithm, she has access to what everyone likes and knows what’s hip and cool. This allows her to change her clothes and hair in an instant. She also runs the site called Buzzalohic – a play on Buzzfeed.

So while Yesss takes Ralph and Vanellope on this tour of the world wide web, she takes them to the one spot where everything people like coverages in one place. Oh My Disney – the place where you can find Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar. It may be a little too on the nose, but it serves one hilarious purpose.

Here, people are avatars, so as they browse the site clicking and taking quizzes, their avatars are directly interacting with characters. Think of it as you watching yourself play around in Disneyland. It’s basically the only place where you will see Tinkerbelle ever interact with a Star Wars character. There are X-wings flying around, and a chance to turn yourself into a Marvel superhero or even into Stan Lee himself.

While Yesss takes them on a tour of Oh My Disney, Vanellope notices a door with a star on it and two Stormtroopers standing guard. When asked who is behind that door, Yesss says there are princesses behind that door. However, Vanellope, ever the troublemaker, wants to mess with them and tries to goad Ralph into joining her. However, he doesn’t listen and Vanellope proceeds to cause trouble.

It’s here that she finds that the door leads into a dressing room full of Disney princesses. Director Rich Moore confirms that these princesses will be voiced by the original voice actors. That means Auli”˜i Cravalho (“Moana”), Kristen Bell (Anna in “Frozen”), Kelly MacDonald (Merida in “Brave”), Mandy Moore (Rapunzel in “Tangled”), Anika Noni Rose (Tiana in “The Princess and the Frog”), Irene Bedard (“Pocahontas”), Linda Larkin (Jasmine in “Aladdin”), Paige O’Hara (Belle in “Beauty and the Beast”), and Jodi Benson (Ariel in “The Little Mermaid”) are all returning.

The film takes a few hilarious twists and turns as they begin to question if Vanellope is an actual princess or not by referencing all the generic princess tropes, such as being cursed, kidnapped, having magical powers, or major daddy issues. But one thing they can all agree on is that there is this big strong man that shows up in her world, to which, Vanellope says yes. And just like most Disney princess movies, they break out into song.

Anyways, Vanellope introduces them to the fashion that she wears, and the princesses love it. While they get excited over their new clothes, an excited Merida expresses her thanks. But she is speaking with such a heavy accent no one could really understand her, to which Jasmine says, “She’s from another studio.”

Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 was just one of those sequels I was unsure that could work, but after seeing this presentation, I can’t wait to see more of it.

Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 hits theaters on November 21, 2018.
