D23 Expo 2017: Pixar’s Untitled Fantasy Set In Suburbia
  |  @   |

It really wouldn’t be much of a D23 Expo without the animation studio making a few new announcements. One of those announcements was from Pixar. During the presentation, Pixar head John Lasseter announced an all-new original project from Dan Scanlon (Monsters University) that takes some inspiration from his life story of losing his father at an early age.

The still-untitled film is set in a modern fantasy world where magic used to be a part of life. But because it was hard to do and very complicated, the people lost interest and soon technology took its place. This world is filled with elves, trolls, and sprites, which is something you would see on the side of a 70s van, commented Scanlon. Here, unicorns are basically like rodents who run amuck and scurry across the streets.

But as silly as this sounds, Scanlon said the film draws from personal stories. Since he and his brother lost their father at a very early age, their only means of knowing him was through silent videos, because that was the only way to make home movies at the time. But their aunt discovered an audio recording of their father and thought it might be useful to them if they wanted to know what he sounded like. Though he said only two words — hi and bye — it was enough to build that father and son connection.

And that sparked the inspiration behind the film as two brothers set out to rediscover magic so that they can find a way to reconnect with their father. For Scanlon, it felt like magic.

Because the film is still in the very early stages of development, no other plot points were given. And because there are still a few other films that have yet to be released, we have to assume that the film is still a very long ways away from being released. However, we will keep you posted on any incoming developments whenever they come in.
