SDCC 2017: ‘Legion’ Creator Noah Hawley Announces Doctor Doom Film

Doctor Doom

You’ll never know what kind of news will drop at SDCC. Take for instance what happened at Ballroom 20 this weekend. Fargo creator Noah Hawley was there to talk about Legion where he dropped a massive very newsworthy bomb on the audience. He told them that he was developing a project for Fox, and then followed it up with two words: Doctor Doom.

While we know Hawley is more than capable of handling comic book material, but an entire film about Doctor Doom seems out of the ordinary. But then again, it may be just the thing Fox needs to hold on to rights to the Fantastic Four. They’re going to need something like this, especially after Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four performed poorly with critics and audiences alike. More on the story below.

THR provided some more details about the Doctor Doom project. According to their sources, the film is currently being developed with Hawley in mind to direct. In addition to directing, he would also write the script. Seeing as he’s already had a success with three seasons of Fargo and the first season of Legion, it was only a matter of time before Hawley took on something on a cinematic level.

Now, Fantastic Four has never really been a huge success in films. The first one managed to get at least one sequel off the ground, but a poor reception proved that the franchise wasn’t working. Both of those films were directed by Tim Story. So the franchise got a much-needed reboot from Josh Trank, and that got even a worse reception and was recognized as a bomb by almost everyone.

So while the two film series about Marvel’s first family isn’t working, maybe a film focusing on their villain could find success. It remains to be seen how this project could work. We’ve seen films about baddies before, Suicide Squad, and one could argue the Despicable Me films, but Doctor Doom could be the first where the villain is driven by something other than redemption.

A little background on the character for those who may not be familiar with him, Doctor Victor Von Doom is the primary antagonist for the Fantastic Four and the leader of the fictional nation of Latveria. He is a highly intelligent inventor and a very powerful sorcerer. Julian McMahon played the character twice in 2005’s Fantastic Four and 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer. Toby Kebbell then took on the role in 2015.

Again, we don’t have a whole lot to go on since the project was just announced. So everything will be pure speculation until we get something more substantial. Until then, stay tuned.
