SDCC 2017: ‘Captain Marvel’ Will Face Off Against The Skrulls

 SDCC 2017 Captain Marvel Skrulls

Slowly but surely, Marvel Studios is beginning to regain the rights of their characters, in some shape or form, of course. It first started with sharing Spider-Man with Sony. And now, you can add the Skrulls back into the mix as they will be the main villains for Captain Marvel.

More on the story announced at Saturday night SDCC 2017 panel below.

It’s still not clear how this deal happened. Skrulls are a major antagonistic force for the Fantastic Four, Marvel’s first family, whose film rights currently belong to FOX. Perhaps because the studio didn’t use them for such a long time, the rights expired and therefore reverted back to Marvel. That’s just a guess. But the important thing is the Skrulls are back with Marvel.

The panel then showed concept art of the Skrulls, and if you are a fan of them, then get ready, because their design stays true to the comics. Of course, this is just concept art, and a few things are bound to change for the MCU. But it does give us an idea that they will stay faithful to the source material.

But back to Captain Marvel. Though the film is still in the early stages of development, it was confirmed that the film will take place in the 90s. Samuel L. Jackson returns to play Nick Fury, and will have two eyes.

Feige has said in the past that Captain Marvel would be a pure origins story. Now that it has been confirmed that the film takes place in the 90s, it remains to be seen how Marvel will address her absence. But this wouldn’t be the first time that a Marvel film has taken place in the past. Captain America: The First Avenger took place during World War II. So it should be interesting to see how Marvel will interpret the 90s.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as the title character. The film is written by Guardians of the Galaxy“˜s Nicole Perlman and Inside Out“˜s Meg LeFauve. It is scheduled for a March 8th, 2019 release.
