‘Luke Cage’ Star Alfre Woodard Joins Disney’s ‘The Lion King’
  |  @   |

Another has been added to the cast of Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King, with Luke Cage star Alfre Woodard signing on.

Woodard will be voicing the mother of Simba and mate of Mufasa, Sarabi. The character was voiced in the original animated movie by the late Madge Sinclair.

Simba is set to be voiced by Donald Glover and Mufasa will once again be voiced by James Earl Jones.

Others characters who have already been cast include Timon and Pumbaa, who will be voiced by Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner; and Zazu, who is being voiced by John Oliver. Also, just a few days ago, we found out that Doctor Strange and 12 Years A Slave star Chiwetel Ejiofor was in talks to play Scar in the movie.

Woodard played Mariah Dillard in Marvel’s Netflix series Luke Cage. She’s also appeared in another Marvel title, playing Miriam in Captain America: Civil War. Other notable credits include Scrooged, Primal Fear, Star Trek: First Contact, K-PAX, 12 Years a Slave, Annabelle, and recently Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her work in 1983’s Cross Creek.

The Lion King is being directed by Jon Favreau (The Jungle Book, Iron Man), from a screenplay written by Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales).

The movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 19, 2019.

UPDATE: The Wrap reports that another Captain America: Civil War actor, John Kani, has also joined the cast. Kani will be voicing the shaman, Mufasa’s royal adviser, and professional newborn lion cub lifter, Rafiki.

Kani played King T’Chaka, the father to Black Panther, in Civil War, and will reprise the role in the character’s standalone movie.
