Cycles. Everything in existence seems to be cyclical. Take this comic for instance. The Mummy: Volume 1: Palimpsest is a rebirth of the mummy movie franchise that Hammer Films brought to the silver screen in 1959. These were, to some extent, a rebirth themselves from the old black and white films decades earlier. But what Hammer Films did was modernize the characters and connect to a whole new generation of fans.

So, in the spirit of it all, Titan Comics has partnered with Hammer to create this all new adventure. Originally a five issue mini-series, this trade paperback combines all of Ronilson Freire‘s sequential art with a whole lot more in the way of galleries, history, and commentary. With each resurrection of our iconic main character, we see some subtle (and not so subtle) differences that reflect the times in which we live. This concept is explored by Peter Milligan in the comic script in such a way as to make as obvious point of different life is today than what it once was.

In this story, we have two groups vying for possession of immortality. One group, the Sect of Anubis, seeks it for personal gain. They want to rule forevermore. The other, The Pyramid Club, wants to prevent this at all costs, for denying their rivals the power over death itself is as worthy an endeavor as there ever could be. But you know what they say about the road to hell, right?

By and large, this is a chase story of how Duncan tries to help the victimized Angel from being turned into a sacrificial lamb of sorts in order to resurrect the long dead High Priestess Nebetah. Inadvertently, he falls in love with her which only adds to the complications in this story line. The plot is thick with people but light on actual intrigue. Whereas I would have expected some sub-plots to entangle the primary one, there are only a couple of simplistic ones that even the most casual reader will see right through.

I understand that the movies of yesteryear were meant to be easy for the common person to enjoy, but today’s readers (and moviegoers) expect and deserve more. As our culture has become more sophisticated, so too must our entertainment. I liked the comic but it didn’t hold my attention, nor did it suspend my disbelief. I read and finished this book because I am a long time Mummy fan and I try to finish what I start.

I hope to see more in this series but I would like to see something deeper for the next incarnation. If you love the franchise, you’ll want this for your collection. If not, probably not. I cannot, in good faith, give this a thumbs up for everyone. Maybe next time?

The timeless horror icon excavated for a brand new tale!

The first in Titan’s new collaboration with legendary Hammer Films.

Once every 34 years, members of the sinister Sect of Anubis gather to drink the blood of a human sacrifice, used as a vessel to contain the imprisoned spirit of a long dead Egyptian High Priestess called, Nebetah, thereby gaining immortality.

As the time draws near for the next sacrifice, the Sect’s chosen victim, a young Ukranian woman called Angel, has already begun to transform into Nebetah. It is a process that will see the young woman transformed into a rotting mummy as the spirit of Nebetah consumes her soul.

However, there exists an ultra secret society, called the Pyramid Club, who are dedicated to eradicating the evil of the Sect. At the height of the ritual the club attack the secret head quarters of the Sect and in the confusion Angel escapes into the streets of London, half consumed by the soul of Nebetah. Forced to accept the help of Duncan, a young rising agent for the Pyramid Club society, the two of them must team up and take the fight back to the Sect of Anubis before the sands of time run out and the failed ritual claims the lives of everyone!
