‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’: Finn Just Can’t Get Out Of The Resistance

Finn (John Boyega) is the reluctant hero of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While he may know right from wrong, he doesn’t exactly want to be in the heat of battle. But when the time calls for it, he will fight until the bitter end. So even though he had a chance to escape to the Outer Rim, he chose to join The Resistance on their mission to bring down the Starkiller Base and rescue Rey (Daisy Ridley) from Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

And even though he showed his grit and valor against Kylo Ren, he was soundly defeated. However, Rey was still able to rescue him, and had to leave the comatose hero to go find Luke. So while Finn was bound to wake up from his coma, it appears that there are still a few scars.

Some new Star Wars: The Last Jedi photos have been released, and we are learning a lot more about Finn’s trauma and how he cannot escape fighting for The Resistance. Check it out here below.

Boyega spoke to EW about Finn’s hesitancy to be in The Resistance’s fight against The First Order. While he may feel like he did nothing, his defection and actions in The Force Awakens are being hailed as heroic to people like Rose (Kelly Marie Tran).

“Everyone in the space, throughout the galaxy, would have heard about the young Jedi who discovered her powers and defeated Kylo Ren and the young former Stormtrooper who helped save the day,” Boyega says. “He’s a hero to people like Rose, who fight for the Resistance because their homes have been destroyed by the First Order.”

While Finn likes to think of himself as “a really big deal,” Rose doesn’t feel the same way. Despite being a gearhead, a grease monkey, and a behind-the-scenes jack-of-all-trades, her sister Paige (played by Veronica Ngo) is much more dynamic. She is a gunner who fights alongside the likes of ace fighter pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). So Rose may not feel like she brings much to the Resistance, so she is starstruck by the likes of Finn.

It is that adoration that gives Finn the inspiration he needs to stay in the Resistance. But there is something inside him that still tells him he should leave.

So the two go on a mission to Canto Bight, a luxurious casino found on the world of Cantonica. Director Rian Johnson joked to EW that, “It’s like Vegas with aliens. So maybe it is just like Vegas.” But the mission does prolong Rey and Finn from reuniting, which makes The Last Jedi that much more like The Empire Strikes Back. However, Johnson says that was unintentional.

“I just tried to kind of ignore that aspect of it and have the story take the shape that it needed to,” the filmmaker says. “But look, Rey is off in a remote location with a Jedi master, and the Resistance is in a tough spot, and we’re intercutting those stories. By its very nature, there are some structural parallels. But these are new characters, they’re dealing with new things, and that ultimately is what defines the movie. So I think that’s going to be unique.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits on December 15, 2017.
