Technically, Gremlins 3 isn’t happening for sure just yet. But it is something that’s been in development for a while now. At least some form of it, anyway, whether that be a new sequel or a remake.
The script is written by original screenwriter Chris Columbus, who also penned The Goonies and would go on to direct Adventures in Babysitting, Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. He recently talked about the sequel, its “twisted and dark” tone, and whether it will use CGI or practical effects.
See what he had to say below.
Speaking to /Film about the new movie Patti Cake$, which he produced, Columbus was asked about Gremlins 3. He spoke about returning to the darker roots of the original for the first movie in the franchise in nearly 30 years, since 1990’s Gremlins 2: The New Batch:
“I’m really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon.”
Columbus also touched on one of the biggest concerns for fans of the original: whether there will be CGI or practical effects:
“Oh, without a doubt, minimal CGI. CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier. It was brutal. It was like a marathon every night for those guys. In the bar scene alone there were 18 [or] 20 people behind the bar. No one had any space to move. It was just hellish for those guys so CGI will simplify that a little bit but it’s all puppets.”
Another interesting thing Columbus touched on briefly, was the beloved main Gremlin, Gizmo, and whether it would make more sense just to kill him off in hopes of preventing another incident from unfolding:
“That comes up in the movie, certainly.
I think it probably is a good idea to be honest with you. Too many people are dying.”
Personally I don’t see dispatching adorable little Gizmo going over too well with fans; I don’t care how much sense it makes to some that he pay the price for idiot humans not following some fairly straight-forward rules.
For now, we continue waiting for more on Gremlins 3.
