So far we’ve seen one of the non-numbered Star Wars spinoffs, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. We also know that, despite a rocky road traveled, a movie about a young Han Solo is coming next year.
Now a new Star Wars spinoff being developed by Lucasfilm has been revealed. It’s being reported that one of the future movies will focus on Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Details on the movie are unknown at the moment, but a director is already attached to the project. Stephen Daldry, who has been nominated for three Academy Awards for his work directing 2000’s Billy Elliot, 2002’s The Hours, and 2008’s The Reader, is currently in early negotiations for the job. Daldry also directed Best Picture nominee Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, episodes of Netflix’s The Crown, and is attached to direct Wicked, a movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical inspired by The Wizard of Oz.
Obi-Wan Kenobi was played by Sir Alec Guinness in the original Star Wars trilogy (and was nominated for an Oscar for his work), and the younger Kenobi in the prequel trilogy was played by Ewan McGregor.
In fact, McGregor has stated in the past that he would like to play the character again, saying:
“I’d very much like to do one too. I think the story between Episode III and Episode IV, I think there’s a story there. I think that’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, if there is one. The one that bridges my Obi-Wan Kenobi and Alec’s Obi-Wan Kenobi because there’s a””I don’t know how long he’s in the desert there, but it’s got to be twenty or thirty years.”
Whether that will become a reality or not is not known. The spinoff doesn’t even have a screenwriter working on it yet, so no potential stars are attached just yet.
Devoting one of the spinoffs to Kenobi is a decision some fans will be fond of. Exactly one year ago tomorrow, we shared with you a fan-made trailer for an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, using footage from some of McGregor’s work to give us an idea what the movie might look like.
