‘Daddy’s Home 2’ Trailer: Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell Bring On The Christmas Slapstick

Daddy's Home 2

A lot of holiday films are pretty much run-of-the-mill and forgettable. A way to make a quick buck by means of using some A-listers in a generic comedy. And while most do even get a sequel, Daddy’s Home proved to be the exception to that rule. Daddy’s Home 2 reunites Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell for another screwball comedy where the slapstick and family friendly comedy is bigger. And of course with all sequels, you’re suppose to go bigger.

So they brought in the likes of John Lithgow and Mel Gibson to play their fathers. Gibson playing Dusty’s (Wahlberg) father, and Lithgow playing Brad’s (Ferrell) father. Both are the spitting image of their kids, and now things are about to get more complicated as Brad and Dusty decided to spend Christmas together. Check out the latest trailer for the film below.

I’ll admit that I chuckled at a few lines and bits in the trailer. Ferrell trying to saw his way through what he thinks is a tree but turns out to be a cell tower garnered a few laughs, as did the friendzone bit. But it’s something that we’ve seen before or at least some version of it. The whole snowflake line seemed to come out of nowhere, not really sure how that works in a film like this. Of course, that is just a line. I’m hoping that there is something more to it than Linda Cardellini‘s character just telling her husband to stop being a snowflake. Plus Gibson’s character questioning Dusty’s masculinity seems like an old and tired trope. Again, it’s not as if we haven’t seen it before.

Still, if the first film turned out to be such a hit that it convinced Paramount to go through with a sequel, how bad could Daddy’s Home 2 really be? Just based on the trailer it seems like they are doubling down on the slapstick. Which could work, after all, this is just a trailer. Maybe they’ll tone it down for the entire film. But then again, cutting down a cell tower, toning down the slapstick seems very unlikely.

Here’s the official plot synopsis.

In the sequel to the 2015 global smash, father and stepfather, Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) and Brad (Will Ferrell) have joined forces to provide their kids with the perfect Christmas. Their newfound partnership is put to the test when Dusty’s old-school, macho Dad (Mel Gibson) and Brad’s ultra-affectionate and emotional Dad (John Lithgow) arrive just in time to throw the holiday into complete chaos.

Daddy’s Home 2 also stars John Cena. You can find the first trailer right here if you missed it.

The film hits theaters on November 10, 2017.
