Pilot Episode For ‘Watchmen’ TV Series Ordered By HBO

In 2015 it was reported that HBO was considering a TV series based on the Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons graphic novel Watchmen. Then, earlier this year in June, we found out that LOST and The Leftovers co-creator Damon Lindelof was in talks to work on the potential series.

Now comes word that things have taken another step toward the series becoming a reality. HBO has put in an order for a pilot episode of the series, and they’ve also commissioned more scripts. In addition to that, a writer’s room for the series has also begun work on the show.

Watchmen takes place in an alternate world where the mere presence of American superheroes changed history: The US won the Vietnam War, Nixon is still president, and the cold war is in full effect. It begins with a murder-mystery before unfolding into a planet-altering conspiracy: When a retired hero is killed, his former teammates must investigate. The conspiracy they uncover will entwine their secret traumas and twisted psychologies, ultimately asking where the fine line is drawn between heroes and villains?

Watchmen was previously adapted by Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder in 2009. Snyder was attached to the potential HBO series for a while, but isn’t involved anymore.

Lindelof, who has talked about how big of a fan he is of the comic in the past, shared this image on Instagram of the first day on the job in the writer’s room:

Day One.
