Warning! Spoilers below for the season 4 premiere of Gotham!

Last season on Gotham was just bananas, as we lost 2 (sort of 3 then 4 then 3 again) major characters. Bruce ran Alfred (David Mazouz, Sean Pertwee) through with a sword, but Ra’s al Ghul (Alexander Siddig) told him to use the Lazarus Pit to restore him. Bruce vowed to never join him. Jim (Ben McKenzie) accidentally killed Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett-Smith) and she and Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) had a touching moment before she died in his arms. Penguin got the drop on Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) and froze him into an ice sculpture. Barbara killed Butch (Erin Richards, Drew Powell) and then Tabitha (Jessica Lucas) killed Barbara. Lee left Jim (Morena Baccharin) after he wouldn’t run away with her and he injected her with the cure for the Tetch virus. A masked Bruce Wayne stopped a robbery in progress.

Spoilers below.

Gotham 4.1 “A Dark Knight: Pax Penguina” review: Bruce stands on a roof gazing out at his city. He’s Batman. A couple gets robbed and Bruce saves them, but one of the guys had a license… from Penguin. WTH? Bruce tries to convince Alfred that keeping Gotham safe will not interfere with the mission.

An 80s wedding gets robbed, but Victor Zsasz (Anthony Carrigan) stops them because THEY did not get a license from Penguin. I’m beginning to understand. They leave and the licensed robbers take over.

Penguin wants to unionize crime. Violent crime is down 57% because of Penguin’s work. “I made Gotham safe. Me.” If someone has a license, they can commit a crime. Someone forgot to give Jim Gordon that memo. Harvey (Donal Logue) tells Jim to stand down. Come on, Harvey. You know better than that.

The wedding gang visits Jonathan Crane and take him. They terrify him into making more scary juice. They rob a bank (unlicensed) and the manager described them as fiery demons. Jim has a lead, but when they follow it, they get ambushed and trapped.

Selina (Camren Bicondova) walks down a dark alley and is surrounded by 5 guys. She takes them out with help at the end from Tabitha. Victor Zsasz comes for a visit, to invite them to Penguin’s club. “This is one of those ‘or else’ kind of deals.”

Bruce stops by the station to see if Jim knows about the licenses. Jim is grouchy about it, and Bruce seems wise, giving some advice, which Jim follows by taunting Penguin. The GCPD attack Jim, so he and Harvey are on their own.

At the party, Bruce tricks Penguin into revealing the list. Selina and Tabitha show up too. The gang shows up as well, but Penguin knew what Jim was doing and caught them.

Bruce follows Selina to apologize about how he treated her at the hospital. They flirt and Alfred comes to let Bruce know that something is going down. Bruce tries to convince Penguin to turn the gang over to the police but no go. Ivy (Maggie Geha), pissed at being shunned, shuts the lights and chaos and fear juice ensues. Penguin is sprayed and sees a demon Nygma. He cries in Jim’s arms.

Bruce visits the list holder and steals it, targeting the future crimes.

One of the gang members goes back to where they locked the kid. “Jonathan Crane isn’t here anymore. It’s just the Scarecrow.”

Wow! What a premiere! Gotham always does what I love best. The movement is so fast and exciting. You think it’s one storyline and then it moves right to the next – so streamlined. I love that this is the season that Mazouz turns into “The Dark Knight.” The mantle of lead protagonist is being transferred from Mckenzie and Mazouz, and their interaction at the station was reminiscent of Oldman and Bale.

Kudos to Anthony Carrigan this episode. His scary comedy was spot on, and he made Zsasz charming.

All in all, a great start to what I know will be a great season.

Gotham airs Thursday nights at 8:00pm ET on FOX.
