Warning! Spoilers below for Outlander!

Last time on Outlander, we saw what happened at Culloden and to Claire (Caitriona Balfe) after she went back to the 1940s through the stones. Jamie and BlackJack Randall (Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies) found each other amongst the battle din, and savagely slashed at each other until they both fell. When Jamie awoke, BlackJack was dead and the British were stabbing the men that were still alive. Jamie was rescued for a very brief time with some other survivors, but the British found them and started killing them one by one. When it was his turn and he gave his full name, the man in charge could not kill him. He was the brother of the boy Jamie spared, john Grey and it was a debt of honor. Although no one believed he would survive the journey, Jamie made it to Lallybroch and his family.

Spoilers below.

Outlander 3.2 “Surrender” review: Jamie is a wanted man, and the British raid the lands often. Ian (Steven Cree) gets taken to the garrison just because, while Jamie slinks about in the forest, a “wild” man. Jamie thinks he sees Claire when he brings a deer, but it is Jenny (Laura Donnelly). Jamie doesn’t talk much, a symptom of his solitude.

Jenny: “James Fraser hasn’t been here for a long, long time.”

Claire sees Jamie too, while she lays next to Frank. But there is attraction there too. Menzies is a sexy beast. I don’t know how she keeps her hands off of him.

Fergus (Romann Berrux) visits Jamie in the cave, who grunts minimal warnings and sends him away. Jamie visits while Jenny is giving birth. A raven is near the house and the boys get the gun to shoot it, which brings the soldiers back. They search the house, Jamie holding the bairn, hiding. The soldiers leave but come back again, following Fergus, who taunts them. Then the chase begins. They chop off his hand and leave him to die. But Jamie saves him. Jenny says that to him and Jamie breaks down in her arms, letting the emotion in.

Fergus being hurt reminds Jamie that he still has a flicker of life in him yet, as he does love other people. “There you are, milord, Fergus responds. Jamie ensures him that he will take care of him.

Frank: “Claire, when I’m with you. I’m with you. but you’re with him.” Their love life is in predictable shambles. Time for twin beds.

Ian talks to Jamie about missing a part of him… his heart… his Claire. Jamie tells Jenny to turn him in, to prove her loyalty to the Crown. Mary McNab comes to the cave with food, and a shave, and sex. She is very understanding, He cries as they begin. Heughan is so good at conveying that pain. The Lallybroch farce begins, and they pull it off – Jamie acts betrayed and Jenny acts outraged, and I cry for them both.

Claire begins medical school as the only woman and the only man that will talk to her is the only “negro.” They are both shunned, and this is where this friendship begins.

This episode flew by so fast, I was actually shocked when the credits came on. Heughan was the absolute star this episode, a seat normally filled by Menzies. Form stoic wild Jamie, to emotionally scarred Jamie, to sacrificing himself for his family Jamie, he was 10 different people ion one hour, each more excellent than the last. I also always enjoy Roman Berrux when he is onscreen playing a rebellious teenager in a time of rebellion so perfectly.

On Sunday we get to meet adult John Grey and the complex friendship they eventually attain. Can’t wait!

Outlander airs Sunday nights at 9:00pm ET on Starz.

  1. This is not so much a review as it is a summary of the plot. I was looking forward to thoughts on the sets, the acting, the costumes, the directing, etc. I know the plot. I watched the episode.
