A big name has signed on for director James Cameron‘s long-in-development Avatar sequels. Kate Winslet, who starred in Cameron’s 1997 box office juggernaut Titanic, is set to reunite with the director for the new Avatar titles.
Cameron said in a statement that he and Winslet had been looking for something else to work on together, and that she’ll be playing a character named Ronal. You can read his full quote below.
Of Winslet joining the cast, Cameron said:
“Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career. I can’t wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life.”
Cameron has a writing team working on the screenplays with him, including Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), the team of Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Jurassic World, Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and Shane Salerno (Armageddon, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem).
Production on the sequels finally kicked off recently at the end of September. As for release dates, Avatar 2 is currently scheduled for release on December 18, 2020—11 years after the first movie was released in theaters, destroying all box office records including the crown worn by Titanic for the 12 previous years. Avatar 3 will then be released only one year later on December 17, 2021. A little three-year break is then in the schedule, before Avatar 4 arrives in theaters on December 20, 2024. And finally, 16 years after the original was released, Avatar 5 will be released on December 19, 2025. Then James Cameron is expected to hibernate for five to seven years.
