Amazon Prime Video has become a competitive powerhouse in online streaming, and Prime members will get another thrilling drama to add to their queues in 2018: the latest iteration of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan starring executive producer John Krasinski (13 Hours, The Office), Wendell Pierce (Ray Donovan, The Wire), and Abbie Cornish (Limitless). Geeks of Doom had the chance to sit down at New York Comic Con 2017 with Pierce and Cornish, along with showrunner and executive producer Carlton Cuse (Lost, The Strain, Bates Motel) and executive producer Graham Roland (Almost Human).

Cornish plays Dr. Cathy Mueller, also known in other versions as Cathy Muller, Cathy Ryan, Dr. Caroline “Cathy” Muller Ryan… there’s probably at least about seven other variations of the name. All that to say, the Australian actress known for her roles in RoboCop (2014), Limitless (2011) and Sucker Punch (2011) will portray the wife of Jack Ryan. With all of the differing portrayals of the character and frankly, the story, Cornish was asked what differentiated this new take. “That it’s now – present to today’s world,” she said. “This is a contemporary series. In series one, we come in at the very beginning of their [Jack and Cathy’s] relationship.” Cuse added that in The Hunt for the Red October, Jack and Cathy are married, but this series starts earlier in the process when it all began. The two also hinted that at the end of the season, the two would likely get married.

Cornish also called Amazon “wonderful collaborators” and noted that she has had “many direct discussions with them” regarding her character. Roland noted that the show is different than past films because “you can do a lot more in a series than in a two-hour movie. We were able to expand other characters that are not Jack. It feels like a book that you can’t put down.” Cuse agreed, adding, “We see this whole season as a Jack Ryan book. Just like the books, you take the same characters, but every season is an eight hour story…episodes range from 38 minutes to 64 minutes. When we found a natural place to stop [with each episode] we stopped.”

Cuse noted that Krasinski was the perfect Jack Ryan for many reasons, namely that “he is smart. You have to believe he is sitting at a desk writing reports and doing analysis, and then going out on the field and being believable in action sequences.” With Krasinski’s career spanning The Office to 13 Hours, it sounds like he is a perfect fit. Cornish also had nothing but great things to say about her costar, calling him “well prepared and professional, but at the same time fun on set. He loves to improvise before a scene. He has a really wonderful range – he can go from serious scenes to lighter ones.” Cornish, who plays an infectious diseases doctor, said she will definitely become a part of the action this season, but, quite literally, “through a microscope.”

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan will highlight current events in our world from multiple perspectives. Cuse said, “That is the hallmark of Clancy’s work [connecting to modern world events]. Graham and I chose to tell a story about Islamic fundamentalist terrorism but we were also able to do some positive portrayals of muslim characters.”
