New York Comic-Con stormed the Javits Center this weekend, and one of my favorite booths was Booth #1946 for publisher Insight Editions. Just browsing the beautifully bound, wonderfully illustrated volumes was enough, but then I spied a holiday gift for my husband – A Die Hard Christmas: The Illustrated Holiday Classic by Doogie Horner.
If that wasn’t enough, I found out that Horner himself would be autographing later that afternoon after his panel, so I beelined back. He could not have been more gracious, signing my book (with a “Yippee-Ki-Yay”) and indulging me with a quick interview.
Geeks of Doom: My first question is… so why Die Hard?
Doogie Horner: I love Die Hard. I’m obsessed with it. It’s a perfect film. I think it’s the apex of American action films. It’s the high renaissance… I have a whole theory, I gave a talk today about it, about how American action movies lined up with the high renaissance art in Italy, which ended only 2 years later with Die Hard 2. Personally it’s a film I have always loved, especially around the holidays. It bothered me that people don’t consider it a Christmas movie.
Geeks of Doom: It bothers my husband, too. So what is your next thing? Are you writing now?
Doogie Horner: I have a novel coming out from Simon & Schuster in Spring 2019, and I’m working on a kids book, and a couple of other things.
Geeks of Doom: Are there any other Christmas books or movies that are your favorites? And are there any other action movies that you love?
Doogie Horner: Other action movies that I really like… I like a lot of the older stuff that aren’t necessarily action movies like, White Heat. I like a lot of Westerns like Unforgiven or Tombstone. I’m pretty picky about action movies – Aliens is great. I’m not sure about holiday books, but movies… It’s a Wonderful Life and Gremlins.
And that was that. If I stayed any longer, the fans on the huge line that was forming behind me might have taken me out.
A Die Hard Christmas: The Illustrated Holiday Classic will be available in stores and online October 24, 2017
