Hard to believe there was a time before Johnny Depp was Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp was a superstar for nearly two decades and then took the role playing the swaggering pirate in a blockbuster based on a Disney theme park attraction. That role earned Depp his first of three Oscar nominations and changed his career path. Here we are 14 years later, and Depp is still chugging along on the high seas in his fifth Pirates film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

This time, Jack is searching for the trident of Poseidon, while an old enemy, Captain Salazar (Oscar winner Javier Bardem) hunts him down. While these films have had their ups and downs over the years, no one can deny Depp’s ability to entertain, and part 5 is maybe the best Pirates film since the original. It is out now on Blu-ray/DVD/Digital combo pack and loaded with special features.

Presented with theater quality picture and sound, you get your traditional deleted scenes and a hilarious blooper reel. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer includes a photo diary from the film as well. But the real awesomeness comes from the expansive behind the scenes look at the film: “Dead Men Tell More Tales.”

“A Return to the Sea” – All the old cast members; Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, and Bruckheimer reunite to discuss the familial aspects to makes these films. Rush thinks it was great foresight to bring in “a couple of indie boys” to direct (Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg) and generally this is about passing the torch of the Pirates franchise to new blood.

“Telling Tales: A Sit-down with Brenton and Kaya” – Speaking of new blood, the two new stars, Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario sit down for a talk about their casting, their first scenes and the general experience filming. It’s funny that Kaya is very pregnant here, while Brenton talks of just having a baby as well. The both reminisce about meeting Johnny Depp, and Kaya is overly complimentary about Kevin McNally (Mr. Gibbs) for taking her under his wing.

“The Matador & The Bull: Secrets of Salazar and Silent Mary” – Oscar winner Javier Bardem goes in depth on his vengeance seeking villain. He talked about being on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides with wife Penelope Cruz and loving every minute and how excited he was to join the cast. The Matador and Bull refer to the two perceptions Bardem used for living and undead Salazar. We then get an extended and fascinating look inside the world of the makeup. Bardem sat for 3.5 hours a day, and we see all the prosthetics used to make Salazar’s undead men. More coolness as we get behind the scenes into costumes, and Salazar’s ship the Silent Mary.

“First Mate Confidential” – Behind the scenes with series regular Kevin McNally. He jokes about aging with the franchise to a point where soon he won’t need makeup. This was just a really fun little jaunt into the life of a character actor and supporting character that many have grown up loving.

“Deconstructing the Ghost Sharks” – Another cool little short where cast and crew discuss the ghost shark attacks on Jack Sparrow and Henry Turner.

“Wings Over Caribbean” – A special guest star, old friend of Johnny Depp”¦ you may have heard of Paul McCartney! For those keeping track, Jack Sparrow’s dad is Keith Richards, and uncle is Paul McCartney”¦ that’s some family tree.

“An Enduring Legacy” – A beautiful way to wrap up with a retrospective of the 5 films and what they mean to the new cast and crew.

This is an unbelievable and comprehensive assortment of footage, and mini-documentaries, which frankly were as entertaining to watch as the film. The entire cast and crew were there, and it makes for a must own for your collection, especially if you’re a fan of the Pirates franchise and a collector.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is out on Blu-ray/DVD/Digital combo pack now.
