The Son
Season 1 DVD
Starring Pierce Brosnan, Paola Nuñez, Jess Weixler, Zahn McClarnon, Elizabeth Frances, Henry Garrett
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release date: October 3, 2017

The Son is the story of Eli McCullough (Pierce Brosnan), orphaned and enslaved as a teenager when a Comanche tribe wiped out his family, who thrived with said eventual Comanche family to grow into a wealthy Texas cattle and oil baron. The season toggles between Eli’s boyhood and his life as the cynical patriarch whose thirst for power overrides his empathy (and our sympathy).

More below.

The series is decent with a lot of potential for character growth. The last 5 episodes are better than the 1st 5. I do not know if I would have stuck with the show had I watched it weekly, but watching back to back mesmerized me and has me excited for season 2. There is no question that this time period was brutal and cruel, and Eli is the product and protagonist of that time. Also, Brosnan has an epic beard.

The DVD doesn’t have much in the way of special features, except deleted scenes, and they are worth a quick watch. If you enjoy the ugliness of history in a Western setting, you should definitely pick this one up.

The Son also stars Henry Garrett ( Pete McCullough), Zahn McClarnon (Toshaway), Jess Weixler (Sally McCullough), Paola Núñez (Maria García), Carlos Bardem (Pedro García), Elizabeth Frances (Prairie Flower), Sydney Lucas (Jeannie McCullough), and Jacob Lofland (Young Eli).

The Son season 2 returns in 2018 on AMC.

Based on the New York Times best seller and Pulitzer Prize-nominated novel, The Son is a sweeping family saga that spans 150 years and three generations of the McCullough family. The ten-episode, one-hour drama traces the transformation of Eli McCullough (Brosnan) from good-natured innocent to calculating killer.  He loses everything on the wild frontier, setting him on the path to building a ranching-and-oil dynasty of unsurpassed wealth and privilege. The series deftly explores how Eli’s ruthlessness and quest for power triggers consequences that span generations, as the McCullough’s rise to become one the most powerful family dynasties in Texas.
