‘The Raid’ Director Gareth Evans Close To Helming Deathstroke Film

Deathstroke

When Ben Affleck teased that Joe Manganiello would be playing Deathstroke in The Batman, fans were elated. The most deadly assassin in DC comics would finally make a cinematic appearance. But as we all know, The Batman fell apart. The film then found new hope when War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves took over as director. However, this also meant that the film would be getting a whole new script. Which put Manganiello’s role as Deathstroke into question. The actor, himself, was even unsure if he would appear in the film.

Now there are reports that Gareth Evans (The Raid and The Raid 2) could direct a standalone film based on the assassin tentatively titled Deathstroke. However, there is still no word yet if Manganiello will play the role. More on the story below.

The Hollywood Reporter says no deals have been completed to either Evans or Manganiello, but if Evans does end up signing on, he would write and direct the film.

It’s still unclear what the film could be about or if it would even be an origins film. But for those who don’t know Deathstroke, aka Slade Wilson, is a mercenary and assassin, who was often an antagonistic force against the Teen Titans. He was also an adversary of other DC heroes, and crossed paths with Batman many times.

After taking an experimental serum, Deathstroke gained superhuman strength, speed, agility & durability, as well as a regenerative healing factor. His military training also makes him a skilled marksman and proficient in hand-to-hand combat.

The fact that this will be a solo film could indicate what kind of film we could be seeing. Warner Bros. may want to emulate the same success Fox has had with Deadpool and Logan, and make Deathstroke their R-rated comic book property. But that is just speculation on my part.

Evans is best known for his work on the Indonesian crime action flicks The Raid and The Raid 2. Both films are touted as the best action films of this generation. Given those two films, it’s a huge surprise that it has taken this long for a studio to offer Evans a major superhero tentpole. His next film, The Apostle, is a period thriller centering on a man in search of his missing sister. It will appear on Netflix.

Of course, this is just another DCEU movie that you can add to the pile of titles that are currently in development. So who knows when we will see Deathstroke, or if we will get to see it at all. But if this means we get to see another Gareth Evans film, then I am all for it. We’ll keep you up-to-date on the progress of this film should anything come up.
