Rejoice, fantasy fans! When the final season of Game of Thrones comes to a close, we no longer have to be devastated about it. OK—we don’t have to be devastated for too long, anyway. Let’s be honest, I weep at least once a week just thinking about it. But I swallow a pint of Ben & Jerry’s like it’s an Advil, and move on with my day. Like a responsible adult. Other networks would sacrifice anything adorable you can think of to have what HBO has in Thrones, but instead of finding that next untapped book series to adapt into a hit, one big name is looking to an old classic: The Lord of the Rings.
Amazon Studios has entered into negotiations with Warner Brothers Television and author J.R.R. Tolkien‘s estate in hopes of developing a TV series based on Tolkien’s legendary story.
Warner Bros. and the Tolkien estate have been reportedly shopping the property around to those who might be interested in a TV series adaptation, and Amazon has come out on top as the current frontrunner.
Not much else is known at the moment because it’s so early on, but there is one more interesting twist to the story. According to sources close to the situation, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos himself is involved in the negotiations.
This is a surprise as Bezos is rarely involved personally in negotiating deals such as this. However, he’s also a known fan of fantasy and science fiction, and Amazon is looking to shift its focus when it comes to its original series lineup. The plan is to move away from the shows Amazon Studios is best known for such as Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle, and introduce some bigger-scale genre titles. A Lord of the Rings TV series would certainly be a large statement fitting to those plans.
Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings has of course been adapted before, including Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy of movies well over a decade ago now. He followed that up later with another trilogy adaptation of Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
