‘Shaun Of The Dead’ Crew Talks Joke Vampire Sequel, Kate Winslet As Liz, and Helen Mirren As…Ed?

Ever wanted to see a sequel to Shaun of the Dead? I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you probably never will. Still, it is something that has at least tempted the minds of those who made the movie.

The cast and crew behind the movie, including director Edgar Wright and stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, recently chatted about the movie, how it came to be, actors who were circling roles (including Oscar winners Kate Winslet and Helen Mirren), the vampire sequel they joked about, and more. You can see what they had to say below.

During the lengthy recollection of Shaun of the Dead, which was initially called Teatime of the Dead, it was revealed that both Winslet and Mirren were possible for roles. Winslet for Shaun’s girlfriend Liz (played in the movie by Kate Ashfield) and Mirren for Shaun’s mom Barbara (played by Penelope Wilton, who starred alongside Mirren in Calendar Girls). As it turns out, Mirren was interested in a much different part: Frost’s Ed.

Here’s what they had to say about this, kicked off with a compliment from Bill Nighy, who played Philip:

BILL NIGHY (Philip): The script was one of the best I’d ever read in my life. It’s perfect.

WRIGHT: Oh, that’s very nice. Some people just didn’t get it. I’m not embarrassing her by saying this, because she says the same thing “” Penelope Wilton initially passed. Helen Mirren was offered Barbara. She said, “I would only do the movie if I got to play Ed.”

FROST: She would have been amazing.

WRIGHT: Kate Winslet was briefly interested in playing Liz.

PEGG: We had tea with Kate Winslet. She was like, “Yeah, okay “” but no.”

KATE ASHFIELD (Liz): I was at the British Independent Film Awards, and Simon and Edgar came up to me. I didn’t know either of them. They said, “We’re writing a zombie romantic comedy and we’d love for you to be in it.” And I said, “Great! I don’t know what that is!” Then, a year later, there was a script, and it was fantastic.

Also coming up was the joke vampire sequel they discussed, which Pegg even went so far as to write a treatment for, titled From Dusk Till Shaun. This also led to talk of when the trio might work together again, something every fan of their movies eagerly awaits:

PEGG: I jokingly wrote a treatment for From Dusk Till Shaun, which was a sequel. Edgar thought it would be funny to do the film again, with vampires. It was all just pub talk.

WRIGHT: I would like to work with them again, of course.

PEGG: It’s just a question of sync-ing up our respective diaries.

FROST: When it happens it’ll happen, and it’ll be great. Or people will hate it.

Also talked about was how Pegg and Frost first met, Danny Boyle making a zombie movie around the same time (28 Days Later), the late great George Romero seeing their movie, and more.

It’s a highly entertaining read for anyone who’s a Shaun of the Dead fan. Head over to Entertainment Weekly to read the full chat.
