Sony Breathes Life Into Spider-Man Spinoff ‘Morbius The Living Vampire’
  |  @   |

Sony has been actively developing a new line of Spider-Man spinoffs since the success of sharing the headlining character with Marvel just a few years back. In addition to Venom, which is now filming, and Black and Silver, which is currently under development, the studio is now putting Morbius The Living Vampire in the works. According to new reports, Power Rangers writers Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama will pen the script. More on the story below.

The Hollywood Reporter says Sharpless and Sazama submitted a script “to the studio after a secret development process.” It looks like the studio was pleased with the material now that they are going to get the film off the ground. While it is still too early to tell what the film will be about, we know that Sony has been developing spinoffs of Spider-Man supporting characters and anti-heroes for quite some time. These characters will not have anything to do with the current MCU, but rather, be in a universe of their own. It’s still unclear how these characters will interact without Spidey, but it makes things interesting.

For those who may not be familiar with who Morbius is, the character first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #101, the first issue not written by Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee. Michael Morbius was a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease, and in an attempt to cure himself of it, he dabbled in unconventional science. But instead of curing himself of his affliction, he turned himself into a vampire-like creature who has a thirst for blood, along with super-strength, fangs, and pale white skin.

Though he found himself on opposite ends of Spider-Man, he occasionally joined him to save the day. No word yet on if Sony will use the Spidey lore for Morbius or if they will start with a fresh new take on the character.

Sharpless and Sazama are best known for penning the current script for Power Rangers. And Morbius would not be the first time that the writing pair has written a script where a vampire is a central character. They also wrote Dracula Untold, starring Luke Evans. The two also wrote the scripts for The Last Witch Hunter and Gods of Egypt. They are also working on the Lost In Space reboot, which will appear exclusively on Netflix.
