The last two Star Wars films have set the December weekend opening box office number bar high. Both The Force Awakens and Rogue One had record-breaking numbers and exceeded all expectations.
Still, it should come as no surprise that Star Wars: The Last Jedi has high expectations. And when I say high, I mean high. According to the latest projections, the sequel is on track to earn $200 million in its opening weekend. More on the story below.
The story comes to us from THR, who stresses that the $200 million plus opening is just a prediction and not a guarantee. However, since Disney acquired the property, Star Wars films have exceeded projected numbers.
For a little bit of history on the last two Star Wars films, The Force Awakens had an opening of $248 million, and Rogue One had a bow of $155 million its opening weekend. But Rogue One was the first in a long line of spinoffs that Lucasfilm and Disney are working on. So while it is loosely tied to the Star Wars saga, it’s proving to be a formula that they want to improve on.
But if The Last Jedi ends up making that $200 opening, it will join an elite class of films. In fact only Force Awakens (the #1 opening weekend of all time), Jurassic World ($208 million), and The Avengers ($207 million) have been able to accomplish the rare feat.
One thing insiders do believe is that The Last Jedi will surpass Beauty and the Beast‘s $178 million opening, which happens to be another one of Disney’s highest grossing films.
So is it even possible for The Last Jedi to exceed The Force Awakens‘ numbers? Sure. Crossing that $200 million line shouldn’t be hard, but the bar is pretty high. That being said we should not underestimate how many times people will see it multiple times on opening weekend (myself included). But we also have to recognize that these are projected numbers.
Directed by Rian Johnson, The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, Benicio Del Toro, and Mark Hamill. It opens in theaters on December 15, 2017.
