Warning – SPOILERS for AMC’s The Walking Dead…

Last week’s The Walking Dead focused a lot on Negan and Father Gabriel as they were trapped and surrounded by walkers, while Negan’s lieutenants were bickering amongst themselves at the Sanctuary trying to figure out what to do next. While in captivity, the holy man confessed his sins, and eventually got Negan to do so too. They ended up working together to fight their way to safety back inside the Sanctuary, where the priest witnessed how much the workers there believe in and rely on Negan to protect them. By the end of the episode, Eugene not only figured out that Dwight is the rat amongst them, but he also found how why Father Gabriel was there (he wants to bring the doctor there back to pregnant Maggie at the Hilltop).

On this week’s episode, 8.6 “The King, the Widow, and Rick,” the mysterious “plan” to defeat the Saviors is still in place; Rick once again tries to strike a deal with the Scavengers; the recovering Michonne and Rosita at Alexandria are antsy to see the Sanctuary; Tara and Daryl both still want Dwight dead; Maggie makes a decision about the Savior POWs; Carol wants King Ezekiel to rule again; and Carl goes looking for the young man in need he met a while back.

The Allies — Alexandria, Hilltop, and the Kingdom — are continuing on with their “plan” to defeat the Saviors, and after six episodes of the season, we still don’t know what that plan is exactly, but these guys are really, really confident that it will work. We know that the Saviors are now cut off from their supplies and they’re surrounded by walkers. Oh, and the allies are to all meet up at the Sanctuary in 2 days to demand a surrender, and that is when they’ll “win.”

Meanwhile, Rick goes back to Jadis, who we see sculpting metal in the nude, and once again asks her and her Scavengers to join forces with him. He then shows her the Polaroid photos he took of the destroyed Savior outposts to convince her to turn on Negan. This is a person he had previously made a deal with who then quickly gave him up to Negan and even shot him. I really hope his plan is more clever than this, because Jadis says no to him, and has him locked up naked. On the outside of his holding container, she draws an A — this is yet another time we see an A pop up on this show.

At Alexandria, Daryl and Tara agree that it was the right thing to keep Dwight alive, because he’s the reason they’ve been able to get so far against the Saviors, but they both still want him dead at the end of all this.

Also at Alexandria, Michonne and Rosita, who are both still recovering from injuries, decide to take off because they just have to see the Sanctuary. They head out and come upon Leo and Zia, two Saviors who are scavenging, and a gun fight ensues. Rosita pulls a rocket launcher on Leo, and of course, he smirks at her, saying she won’t use it, and then BOOM! she blows him away. Umm, Leo, she’s survived the apocalypse this long and you don’t know anything about her; what makes you think she wouldn’t have the guts to use that weapon on you, asshole!?!?!? Anyhow, Zia makes a getaway in the “Fat Lady,” a truck rigged with speakers playing operatic music. Just as Rosita and Michonne think they’ve really screwed things up, Daryl and Tara show up in a garbage truck and crash into the Fat Lady and take Zia out.

Outside of Alexandra, Carl is out in the woods searching for the young man he had met a while back, who Rick had fired on (warning shots, just to scare him off). Carl finds the stranger, who had put out traps to catch walkers and put them down. We learn the man’s name is Siddiq and he spends his days putting down walkers because his mother believed that this released their soul and he’s trying to honor his parents. Carl, on the other hand, is going against his father by seeking out Siddiq and wanting to bring him back to Alexandria. It’s clear that Siddiq is a good person and would be an asset to their community, but he’s coming in at a tumultuous time for them — it’s All Out War. He might have been hungry and thirsty, but he was surviving on his own (somehow), but now he’s going to be pulled into a huge war.

At the Kingdom, King Ezekiel has given up his crown. He can’t get passed what happened to his soldiers — they were all killed by the Saviors in an ambush — and the death of his beloved tiger Shiva. Faithful Jerry is still serving as his bodyguard, even though Ezekiel relieved him of his duties. Carol tries to get Ezekiel to rule again, stressing that his people need him. Even if he doesn’t feel like the King anymore, he needs to do what he does best – play the part. But he can’t, he says. Carol had said that they need to meet Rick at the Sanctuary in two days (remember, that’s when they “win”), so she’s sticking to that. Earlier, young Henry, who’s older brother Benjamin was killed by the Saviors, tells Carol he wants to fight. Of course, Carol told him to go away and not follow her, but he does anyway. This little boy wants to fight and to avenge his brother’s death, yet Ezekiel is content to hide in his theater on the floor of his throne and wither away. Obviously, he’ll snap out of it and at just right time, but for now, he’s not doing anything.

At Hilltop, Maggie has to make a decision about what to do with all the Savior POWs that Jesus brought back there. For now, they’re all confined right outside the fence, with Jesus watching over them. This really is the most stupid current plotline. The Allies invade the Savior outposts and slaughtered people, yet Jesus for some reason has decided that they have to keep alive this particular group, which is filled with some of the worst people in it!!! This includes Jared, the Savior who killed Benjamin and who is an overall total douchebag. Of course, he is the one causing trouble again now. When Jesus tries to give him a turnip, he says “Keep it” and tosses it back to him. Later, he attacks Maggie, who cracks him with her rifle. He also tries to break free of his bonds, but one of the other POWs, Alden, stops him, saying he’s caused enough problems for them already. Jared tells Maggie she’s going to get people killed, and brags to Alden that the Hilltop will be theres eventually. Again, WHY is Jared being kept alive? Ok, Maggie mentions that they will try to trade the Saviors for some of their own people, so maybe he thinks Jared is a valuable trade. But still. In the end, Maggie agrees to let the POWs in and promises to treat them well. But, she does give Gregory the boot, because he clearly cannot be trusted. Again, this guy should have never been let back in to begin with.

The episode ends with Aaron and Enid talking to Maggie, who is holding baby Gracie, Aaron’s new charge. Aaron talks about missing his husband, who was killed during the Outpost raids. When Jesus joins them, this is when Maggie says they have to use the POWs as bargaining chips to get their people back, and if it doesn’t work, they can’t let the POWs live. Aaron takes off, with Enid following him – he’s off to make sure they “win” and she wants to come too.

Will next week bring us the 2 days forward to the end of the war? I hope so, because things are going pretty slowly so far. I’m wondering why does Rick need the Scavengers? After how they betrayed him, it would have been better had his people ambushed their dumpster home and wasted them. They totally deserve it! Perhaps they’ll get theirs in 2 days as well. This episode didn’t give us any Negan and truthfully, I’m glad because I really just can’t take all of his speeches and rattling on anymore. I just want Negan and Rick to come face to face, and Rick kicks his ass. Is that too much to ask?

  1. Maggie doesn’t give Gregory the boot, she throws him in with the Sanctuary prisoners. :-)
