Wait, What? Quentin Tarantino Working With J.J. Abrams On New ‘Star Trek’ Movie; Might Direct
  |  @   |

A good “is it April Fools’ Day already?” story is always fun, and this one is a doozie. It’s being reported that Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill writer and director Quentin Tarantino has come up with what’s described simply as “a great idea” for a new Star Trek movie, and he has pitched that idea to producer J.J. Abrams, who directed a reboot of the Trek cinematic franchise in 2009 and a sequel in 2013.

If that’s not unbelievable enough for you, it gets even crazier. The report says that if all goes well, Tarantino could even end up directing this new Star Trek movie.

Both Tarantino and Abrams are pretty busy right now. The former is getting ready to direct his ninth feature, which is set in 1969 Los Angeles and includes the Manson family murders as a backdrop.

The latter, on the other hand, is now working on his second title in a second “star” franchise, Star Wars: Episode IX, the closing chapter in the latest trilogy which he kicked off with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and which continues this month with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Abrams took over the next entry in the saga after former director Colin Trevorrow departed the project. Something Star Trek studio Paramount wasn’t thrilled about.

So with those two quite busy, the plan now is to assemble an entire writers room. That group will then listen to Tarantino’s idea, and get to work on figuring out a screenplay. And if everything goes well with that course of action, Tarantino might actually commit to directing the movie.

The likelihood of this actually happening? Who knows. At this point, it’s all very early and we don’t have any more details than what’s mentioned here. But it would be quite shocking if it happened. Even more shocking than if David Fincher directed World War Z 2, some might argue.

Tarantino being interested in Star Trek, however, is not at all surprising. He’s a big fan of the original series and, as THR noted, he said in a 2015 interview with Nerdist:

“The only thing that limited them was their ’60s budget and eight-day shooting schedule. You could take some of the classic Star Trek episodes and easily expand them to 90 minutes or more and really do some amazing, amazing stuff.”

What makes it all hard to believe, is that Tarantino has talked about retiring after making his 10th film. Many have wondered what it would be like if he ever made a big studio blockbuster type movie, but if this were his last movie ever? That would be…unexpected, to say the least. Intriguing—so very intriguing—but definitely unexpected.

Everyone on the planet who’s a fan of his work hopes he never fully retires, of course. Waiting years between new movies is not a problem at all. But the thought of never having a next Tarantino flick to look forward to? That is truly depressing to think about.

For now, we can only wait and see where this all goes.
