‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ Behind The Scenes Featurette Showcases Film’s Practical Effects
  |  @   |

Universal has been dropping a couple of teases for the first trailer for the highly anticipated Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Though we don’t know much about the film itself, the teases have shown that Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) return to the island, while trying to outrun an active volcano and not be eaten by dinosaurs.

In the hours leading up to the trailer’s release, the studio has just unveiled their latest promotional material, a behind-the-scenes look at the film. Check it out below.

The featurette offers a look at the camaraderie within the cast, but also delves into the use of practical effects. There are a lot of shots of animatronics, and the cast running through tangible sets as opposed to running against the green screen backdrop. This is pretty exciting to see as it brings a sense of realism to the film, which would normally have these CGI settings.

Howard assures viewers that this Jurassic film takes dinosaurs to where it has never been before. No, not space, although that is one idea we should be exploring. No, it looks like the dinosaurs themselves are the ones in danger. But this danger is not from the humans, but rather, mother nature itself, as we see hints of that volcanic activity destroying the island. So it appears that it is up to Owen and Claire to rescue these dinosaurs.

J.A. Bayona takes over as director. “I love playing with suspense,” said Bayona. “I like intensity and I love the audience to feel the total experience.” The director is no stranger to all of those elements having been behind the lens for films like The Orphanage and A Monster Calls.

We also see hints of Jeff Goldblum, who returns to reprise his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm, who appears to be brought before a committee of some sort to make a decision on the situation that is happening.

But the one thing that stands out in this featurette is the cast’s excitement working with practical effects, namely animatronic dinosaurs. Overall, it looks like the sequel will be better than its predecessor. I for one wasn’t much of a fan of Jurassic World, not that it mattered considering that the film went on to be on of the top grossing films of the year in 2015 and of all time both domestically and worldwide.

We will keep you posted on the release of the trailer when it drops tomorrow during Thursday Night Football on NBC. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opens in theaters on June 22, 2018.
