X-Men: Apocalypse Jean Grey

And this time, we will get it right. Or at least we can hope that Simon Kinberg gets it right as he makes his directorial debut with X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which as you could have guessed, will be a loose adaptation of the “Dark Phoenix Saga” comics storyline written by Chris Claremont. Though, this wouldn’t be the first time that the X-Men franchise has attempted Dark Phoenix in a film. In 2006, X-Men: The Last Stand tried to use a resurrected Jean Grey (then played by Famke Janssen) as the Dark Phoenix who was being manipulated by Magneto (then played by Ian McKellen).

Now with the film franchise’s timeline being rebooted, we can look forward to some wrongs being righted. We are getting our first look at Dark Phoenix, which includes our very first peek at Jessica Chastain‘s villainous character. Check them out below.

Before we get a look at the images, which come courtesy of EW, here’s a brief look at the plot synopsis of the film:

Set in 1992, about 10 years after the events of last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix opens with the X-Men, including Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters), in a new, unexpected role: national heroes. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) even lands on the cover of Time magazine. But his growing ego puts the team at risk. After they’re dispatched to space for a rescue mission, a solar flare hits the X-Jet and the surge of energy ignites a malevolent, power-hungry new force within Jean (Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner) “” the Phoenix.

Yes, the X-Men are heading off into space, and much like the comics and the animated series, Jean Grey will return to Earth with some new abilities and enhanced psychic powers. However, it appears the energy may be too much for her, as she can be easily manipulated by an outside force, which comes from Chastain’s character, who happens to be a shapeshifter.

But the X-Men film franchise was rife with numerous reports of a hostile work environment which includes accusations from Ellen Page that The Last Stand director Brett Ratner displayed homophobic and misogynistic behavior during the production of the film; and Bryan Singer being reportedly absent, on a consistent basis, from the set of X-Men: Apocalypse. However, it looks like Kinberg was the change the workplace needed according to Chastain:

“I had heard stories of these sets. But working with Simon and Hutch and Sophie was the most loving, strong, happy set.”

Jennifer Lawrence, who also happens to play a shapeshifter in Mystique, even admits things were happily different without Singer:

“It was unrecognizable. Everything was on time. Everything was organized. These movies have always been fun amidst chaos, and now they were fun with no chaos.”

As for the film itself, McAvoy, says:

“This is probably the most emotional X-Men we’ve done and the most pathos-driven. There’s a lot of sacrifices and a lot of suffering.”

Turner, who studied schizophrenia and multiple personality disorders to prepare, added:

“It’s about the butterfly effect of this thing happening. What happens when the person you love the most falls into darkness?”

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will open in theaters on November 2, 2018.
