The Ocean films were sleek and fun heist flicks that featured a talented all-male crew pulling off elaborate heists to get rich or at least come out richer. But they aren’t the only ones who can think of pulling off a heist. And we will get to see what the women can do in Ocean’s 8.
The film isn’t an official reboot of the franchise, at least according to Sandra Bullock, who plays a character who will lead her crew to pull off an impossible heist. The actress has also confirmed that her character also happens to be Danny Ocean’s (George Clooney) sister. More on the story below.
Bullock confirmed the sibling connection in an interview with EW. She also explains why she has been out of the picture for all three films, and what she intends to do with her newfound freedom after being incarcerated for five years:
“Yes, I am Danny Ocean’s sister. I’ve been incarcerated for about five years and you find out why during the course of the film. I mean, that’s sort of a tiny subplot. But that’s, you know, but I’m definitely his sister and we definitely come from the same family and we’re both very good at what we do in our own special way. So you can only imagine that once I get out, that’s when the heist ensues.”
We should have known that this wasn’t going to be a traditional reboot. Though the title was a hint that it could have been pure coincidence that the characters shared the name, it turns out that there is a sibling connection between the two. That should explain some of the cameos that we will be seeing in the film, which again, should have been a hint that this wasn’t going to be that tired old reboot we would normally get.
Bullock also confirms that members of her crew have a certain specialty that will help them succeed (?) in pulling off this heist:
“Everyone has their specialty, yes. What’s fun is that it’s not their whole life. And they haven’t been able to do what they’re brilliant at because the industry, if you can call it the industry, the industry of crime hasn’t really allowed them to excel and execute what they’re good at. So you’ll find one who’s a stay-at-home mom with two children who sells things on the QVC. And here comes Debbie Ocean who enlists their help of them, but not because she only wants females. It’s really fun.”
The actress also responded to the trolling comments that came in when it was announced that Ocean’s 8 would have an all-female cast. Much like the Ghostbusters reboot, the film received a flood of negative comments from the internet, calling the reboot unnecessary, among other things. Here’s what she had to say about those comments:
Everyone should’ve just taken a breath and said, ‘let’s see what happens.’ It doesn’t take just five people to make a movie. It’s pretty much like around 300. So I keep reminding everybody, if you hate my film remember there’s another 299 people all around me. We’re not a reboot. We’re just a this is what’s happening in 2017. It’s not even a passing of the torch. It’s a parallel story of another family member that was raised in the same family Danny Ocean was and what happens when Debbie steps out of jail with all of these amazing, powerful women.
