Geek Peek: First Look At ‘Aquaman’ Will Make You Want To Hit The Gym

One of the biggest problems for Justice League was introducing three new heroes to the DC superhero universe. This did not give much room for any narrative or exposition as the ensemble film had to squeeze out time to give some origin stories to The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg. However, all will be getting standalone origin stories of their own. At least we hope. But one that is for certain is Aquaman.
The film will see Jason Momoa reprise his role as Arthur Curry, the half-man half-Atlantean who is trying to figure out his place on land and in the ocean. Now we have our first look at the upcoming superhero film, which is being directed by James Wan (The Conjuring). Check out the first look here below.
As with all first images, this one doesn’t give us much to go on. However, if you are looking for a reason to hit the gym, well, this topless shot of Momoa should give you the motivation you need. But if you are looking for something spoilery or a plot point, well, this isn’t the first look you are looking for.
Entertainment Weekly debuted the image, along with interview bits that tell us what to expect from the film. In their interview, Wan said, “It’s going to look very different, it will feel very different “” aesthetically, tonally, story-wise “” it’s my own take. It’s a much more a traditional action-adventure quest movie.” So it’s going to feel like a superhero Indiana Jones? That’s new. At least something that hasn’t been really explored by the MCU.
This should be exciting as the Aquaman comic book character has been the butt of many jokes for his lack of interesting powers, something that Wan fully acknowledges:
“Aquaman has been the joke of the comic book world, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought how cool that would be,” Wan explains. “Let’s take the character everybody makes fun of and do something really interesting with him.”
Unlike Justice League, which only gave us a bare minimum tease of Curry’s struggles as a half-man half Atlantean, Aquaman will explore those struggles. Here’s what Momoa had to say:
“Justice League was only a weekend in Arthur Curry’s life. This is a totally different beast. In Aquaman, you see when his parents met and what happened to hem. Then the little boy being raised and finding his powers and going through that and never being accepted on either side. And then becoming this man who puts up all these walls. You just slowly see this man harden up and be completely reluctant wanting to be king and not knowing what to do with these powers he has. I think James Wan just killed it.”
Aquaman also stars Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Temuera Morrison, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Patrick Wilson, and Nicole Kidman. It is scheduled to hit theaters on December 21, 2018.
