When Sony and Marvel Studios made a deal to share Spider-Man, the former promised us that they would be expanding the Spider-Man universe without its flagship character. As strange as that sounds, the studio is fully confident that their Spider-Man-less universe can work. Not only that, but they would also be taking the character to the world of animation as well. But not with Peter Parker as the lead. Instead, the animated film would focus on Miles Morales, the second Spider-Man of the Spider-Man Ultimate universe, and the first Afro-Latino superhero. And now, we are getting a first look at the new animated Spider-Man film titled Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.
If you are expecting to see some traditional hand-drawn animation or CGI, then prepare to be quite surprised, as the film will have an unexpected style that will surely grab your interest. Check out the trailer here below.
The Get Down star Shameik Moore will provide the voice of Miles Morales, the Afro-Latino teenager who takes up the mantle of Spider-Man. Though he doesn’t say much in this trailer, it proves that animation is another great way to tell the Webslinger’s story. The style of movement and the bright colors make this animated film feel like a moving comic book.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse has an interesting cel-animation style that feels like a comic book popping out. It feels fresh and entirely new. It certainly strays away from the traditional CG animation styles we’ve been seeing as of late.
Since this is a teaser, we don’t know much about the film. However, it does confirm that in this Spider-Verse, there is more than one Spider-Man. Though the P.P. on the headstone should be a slight hint that the film would not be about Peter Parker, who is the webslinger we’ve come to know and love. As the trailer goes on, we get to see Spider-Man’s powers, agility, and the ability to defy physics. And towards the end, we finally get that confirmation that Miles Morales will be taking on the title of Spider-Man. Though he seems to be unsure of himself as he looks to a faceless mentor, and asks “So, wait, how many of us are there?” The camera pulls out, and we see a spider crawl down a pillar as a subway train zooms on by in the background drowning out the answer with its loud rumbling noise.
For those who may not be familiar with who Miles Morales is, he is the nephew of Aaron Davis aka the Prowler, a thief who steals a formula from Oscorp that was used to create Spider-Man. What Davis doesn’t know is that one of the laboratory spiders hitched a ride in Davis’ duffel bag during the robbery. When the young Morales pays a visit to his dear uncle, that same spider bites him, giving him similar abilities to the first Webslinger. However, he doesn’t tell his parents, due to his father’s distrust of heroes. But after witnessing Peter Parker’s death at the hands of the Green Goblin, Morales realizes he has a responsibility to be the hero that he was meant to be, and takes it upon himself to act as Parker’s replacement.
So what’s interesting about this trailer is it recognizes or at least acknowledges that Morales is not the first Spider-Man to exist in this world. As aforementioned, there are a few nods that hint that Peter Parker was the first, but it does not directly confirm his existence. However, since this will be about Miles Morales, I suspect the film will be about him accepting his role as the hero and that he must use his powers responsibly.
Academy Award-winner Mahershala Ali will voice Aaron Davis and Atlanta star Brian Tyree Henry will voice Jefferson Davis. Liev Schreiber is signed on to play the villain, although his character has yet to be revealed.
