‘The Nutcracker and The Four Realms’ Images Are Pure Christmas Magic
  |  @   |

It’s the time of the season, and what better way to celebrate that time than to have images promoting a Christmas movie. Of course, there are many remakes and reboots of classic Christmas movies. So it should come as no surprise to anyone that Disney has released the first images for a new vision of The Nutcracker. Disney’s take will be called The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Directed by Lasse Hallström, the film will be based on an adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 German fairy tale, which was turned into a ballet by Tchaikovsky.

Now we are getting a first look at the film, which is due to hit theaters late next year. Check out the first two images here below.

EW says the film will be in the same vein as The Chronicles of Narnia, and will draw inspiration from both fantasy and the ballet. Hallström’s take will also feature some new changes. For instance, Mackenzie Foy will be playing the brainy and bold Clara, the lead character of the film. The young actress, who is best known for her role as Renesmee Cullen in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, describes her character as smart and independent, and one who “loves to think and find the fastest way to solve a problem,” according to EW.

Clara will be drawn to four magical realms after she loses a magical key that will unlock a priceless gift from her mother. In order to retrieve it, she will travel across the Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers, and Land of Sweets, where she meets Keira Knightley‘s Sugar Plum Fairy.

However, Clara will soon discover that not all realms are as sweet and magical as they sound. There is the dark fourth realm that she must cross in order to achieve her goal. And the one who oversees that realm is an evil queen, played by Helen Mirren, who says her character is fierce with a modern edge. “Pretending to be in these imaginative worlds, it’s why I wanted to become an actress,” Mirren tells EW. “It’s my dream come true, really.”

While the film is directed by Hallström, who’s best known for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules, and Chocolat, another director is stepping in for 32 days of significant upcoming reshoots. THR reports that the director stepping in is Joe Johnston, who’s known for Captain America: The First Avenger, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Jumanji, and Jurassic Park III. The reason for the new director is simply because Hallström was unable to commit to them due to a scheduling conflict.

It’s also be revealed that material for the reshoots was penned by Spotlight screenwriter Tom McCarthy. The main screenplay was written by Ashleigh Powell.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms will dance its way into theaters on November 2, 2018.
