Woody Harrelson In Talks To Join The Cast Of ‘Spider-Man’ Spinoff ‘Venom’

Sony’s first attempt to launch a Spider-Man universe was mocked and ridiculed for trying to keep up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe by squeezing in every single possible Easter Egg you can think of into one itty bitty film. So after that was a huge disaster, the studio decided to share the character with Marvel, effectively killing the Amazing Spider-Man universe. But in doing so, they were able to re-evaluate that same universe. However, there’s plenty of red tape that will not allow the Spider-Man characters Sony currently owns to play in the Marvel Studio sandbox.

So, with so many characters at their disposal, they are creating a Spider-Man less universe where all Spider-Man supporting characters can come play. As absurd as that sounds, it looks like they are drawing some major attention. Venom in particular, as it touts a cast that consists of Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, and Jenny Slate. And if that weren’t impressive enough, the Ruben Fleischer-directed film will be adding Woody Harrelson to the cast. Find out more on the story below.

The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report on the news. While they cannot confirm what character Harrelson will be playing, Venom will be a reunion of sorts for the actor. Harrelson appeared in Fleischer’s zombie-comedy, Zombieland. In fact, there were rumors floating around that Harrelson would make an appearance in Flesicher’s latest directorial effort.

It’s hard to tell where Venom could go, especially without Spider-Man serving as the source of the anti-hero’s rage. Word is that the film is drawing inspiration from two major story arcs, “Lethal Protector” and “Planet of the Symbiotes.” For a Sparknotes version of the two stories, the former is a six-issue series that explored Eddie Brock/Venom’s days as an anti-hero in San Francisco. However, a vengeful father and false news reports smear Venom’s reputation, and Brock is forced to clear his name by fighting a variety of the black suit’s offspring.

“Planet of the Symbiotes” literally lives up to its title, as Brock questions his relationship with the suit. In light of its rejection, the suit makes a siren call to other symbiotes to come to Earth. And during their murderous invasion, the symbiotes are building a teleporter that would allow them to bring more of their kind to earth so that they could turn it into a planet of symbiotes.

Venom is scheduled to hit theaters on October 5, 2018. Click right here for more on the movie.
