‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’: Director Rian Johnson Kills Your Snoke Theory
  |  @   |

Now that Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been released, fans have had time to digest and think about what they have just seen. It also means that there will be some spoiler pieces coming out this week. And we will be covering them as it pertains to the future of the franchise and Episode IX. So fair warning, if you haven’t seen the film yet, there will be spoilers in the following post. So if you haven’t seen it yet, then you might want to avoid this post. But if you have already seen it, and want to know more about Snoke’s role in The Last Jedi, continue reading.

Director Rian Johnson was involved in a Q&A at the AMPAS last weekend, and he had a chance to talk about Snoke’s climactic scene. You know, the scene where Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) kills Snoke (Andy Serkis) by igniting a lightsaber which slices the former Supreme Leader in half from the waist down. And despite this polarizing decision, it gave Kylo Ren the motivation he needed to assume control of the entire First Order.

From EW’s coverage:

“When I was working on the character of Kylo, I came to a place where I thought the most interesting thing would be to knock the shaky foundation out from under him at the beginning of this movie”¦By the end of this film, he’s gone from being a wannabe Vader to someone who is standing on his own feet as a complex villain taking the reins.”

“But then the question is: What place would Snoke have at the end of that?”¦That made me realize the most interesting thing would be to eliminate that dynamic between the “˜emperor’ and pupil, so that all bets are off going into the next one. That also led to the possibility of this dramatic turn in the middle, which could also be a really powerful connection point between Kylo and Rey.”

Now that Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren are no longer tethered to their past, they have full control of their destinies. How they intend to accomplish that will be up to J.J. Abrams. But this new Trilogy should provide closure to our new characters, or at least a closure to the Skywalker saga. But by killing Snoke, Johnson put an end to all the theories as to who he could be and if he is connected to anyone that we know.

“It would have stopped any of these scenes dead cold if he had stopped and given a 30-second speech about how he’s Darth Plagueis”¦It doesn’t matter to Rey. If he had done that, Rey would have blinked and said, “˜Who?’ And the scene would have gone on”¦and I’m not saying he’s Darth Plagueis!”

Again that makes sense. Providing that connection would only end up in disappointment because it did not live up to our expectations. All the novels and video games that were considered canon only fueled those theories and speculations. And obviously, their likeness gave way to the thought that there could be a connection in the form of a twist. Plus, it would have been nothing more than fan-based fodder. Severing those connections allows this new Trilogy to exist on the strength of its own legs. And now we have new stories to look forward to, ones that aren’t established to any existing novels.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out in theaters now.
