Ridley Scott in talks for Merlin saga

Ridley Scott is a man who never takes breaks, and as such, he is always adding titles to his pile of films that are slated to be made. He proved himself to be a tireless filmmaker when he finished reshooting All The Money In The World after having to cut Kevin Spacey out of the film and replacing him with Christopher Plummer. Scott spent nine days effectively erasing the disgraced Spacey out of the film and substituting his scenes with that of Plummer’s. So as we wait to see what Scott has in store for us next, the director looks to be adding to his filmmaking slate with Disney.

According to new reports, Scott will be collaborating with Disney to work on an adaptation of The Merlin Saga, which centers on the legendary wizard’s early years before he became the advisor to King Arthur. More On the story below.

Variety says the film is based on T.A. Barron‘s series of books – 12 of the them – which cover Merlin’s years as a child, adult, and path he took to become the wizard that we know now.

Scott is currently in talks with Disney, and according to sources close to the negotiations, The Merlin Saga could be the director’s next film. In fact, this is not Scott’s only medieval epic he is working on with Disney. The director also met with Disney execs concerning their live-action adaptation of the studio’s animated classic The Sword In The Stone, which is currently being written by Game of Thrones writer/producer Brian Cogman. No word yet on what became of that meeting.

Arthurian films have proven to be a box office hazard for studios, but they are still churning them out for some reason. WB’s King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword proved to be a costly film, as it floundered last summer. Other tales based on the king didn’t produce the results that studios wanted. But maybe this will be a positive turn that the source material needs to be a success at the box office and for studios.

Tendo Nagenda and Foster Driver are overseeing the project.

One thing is for sure, if Scott lands the deal, it would be the first time for him working on a family-friendly project for the studio. Scott’s production company, Scott Free, will also be producing along with Gil Netter. Academy Award-winning screenwriter Philippa Boyens (Lord Of The Rings), will pen the script.
