20th Century Fox Shifts Release Dates For ‘X-Men’ Spinoffs ‘Deadpool 2,’ ‘The New Mutants,’ and ‘Gambit’

It’s going to be a while before Marvel Studios can find a way to incorporate the X-Men films and characters into the MCU properly. So for the time being, Fox will be releasing their current slate of X-Men films as is. That slate included three films that were to be released this year. They were The New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
However, it looks like Fox has done some scheduling shifts for at least two of the films. Deadpool 2 is getting bumped up to an earlier release, while The New Mutants is getting pushed back, way back to next year. Gambit is also getting a new release date, but who knows if that film will ever get made. Check out when these films will be released in the full story below.
The Hollywood Reporter says Deadpool 2 will be moving from its original July 2018 release to two months earlier in May. Now you can expect to see it on May 18, 2018. That is one week earlier than Solo: A Star Wars Story. Obviously, this tells us that the studio is very confident in the highly anticipated sequel. Even more so that they would go against a Star Wars spinoff. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We haven’t seen an official trailer for either film. Still, the move says Fox has a lot of faith in the film, and getting to see it earlier than expected is always a bonus.
As for The New Mutants, the film will be pushed back from its April 13, 2018 release, all the way to February 22, 2019. According to the report, the reason for the new release date is to avoid any overlap of two X-Men films. A report from Nerdist says that the film tested well with certain audiences, but insiders say studio execs want to see more scares in the film. So in light of the recent horror hits, it only makes sense to hear that Fox wants to emphasize the horror. Guess they will be giving director Josh Boone a few more months to work on increasing those scares.
Now Gambit, a film that has been suffering production problems since the title was first announced, is getting yet another new release date, but it won’t be a huge move. The film about the Ragin’ Cajun will move from its February 14, 2019 release to a more mass-friendly release of June 7, 2019. Of course, now they just have to find a director that will be able to meet that release date. Gore Verbinskileft the film recently due to scheduling issues. Insiders say that execs want to see the film lean on a more comedic tone revolving a heist. That could work for a film like Gambit considering that the character is a thief and he is one of the more comedic members of the X-Men.
Dark Phoenix is staying put in its November 2, 2018 date for the time being.
