Leonardo DiCaprio

Now that Quentin Tarantino‘s untitled 1960s/Charles Manson film has found a home over at Sony, the casting process can begin. Among the actors who were being considered: Margot Robbie, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Now it’s been confirmed that DiCaprio will be reuniting with his Django Unchained director. There are also reports that Al Pacino may be joining the film as well. More on the story below.

Deadline confirms that DiCaprio would play a TV male actor. Based on previous reports, the film would be set in 1969 Los Angeles, and focus on a male TV actor who’s had one hit series and is looking for a way to get into the film business. His stunt double friend is also on the same path. At the same time, the murders of Sharon Tate and four of her friends by Charles Manson’s cult of followers is making news headlines.

Their report adds that Tarantino is talking to Robbie about playing the role of Tate. Cruise or Brad Pitt may play opposite DiCaprio as the TV actor’s stuntman friend. But the casting rumors aren’t done yet. There’s more. Variety says Pacino is being eyed for a mysterious role in the film.

Since Tarantino cut ties with The Weinstein Company last year, the director was looking for a new distributor. He signed on with Sony after they gave a compelling pitch to go with them. Currently, the film is budgeted at $95 to $100 million. They beat Warner Bros, who had a pricier pitch, which included their circular entrance with 1960s nostalgia like cars of the late ’60s, setting up their executive office with vintage furniture from the era and mock posters for the movie, even putting the WB logo circa 1969 on full display. When compared to Sony’s low-key multimedia pitch, WB may have gone a bit too far.

It should be fun to see who will be the next to join Tarantino’s ninth film, and we will keep you posted on who will be cast next.

Tarantino’s untitled film is slated for an August 9, 2019 release.
