DC’s Flash movie, which is currently going by the title Flashpoint, has had a hard time getting into production. Mostly because the film has had a difficult time finding a director to stay from start to finish.

However, it looks like WB’s troubles may be over, at least for the time being, as the film has found new directors in the Vacation reboot directors and Spider-Man: Homecoming writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. More on the story below.

The Hollywood Reporter says Daley and Goldstein will be the third directors to board the project following two fallouts, Seth Grahame-Smith and then with Rick Famuyiwa. The former was the first to board the project, in 2016. The plan was to use a treatment written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller – the two were actually considered to direct the film before they would move on to Solo: A Star Wars Story – and have the film released in 2018. Grahame Smith would step away from the project entirely due to creative differences.

In 2017, Famuyiwa would then step in as Grahame-Smith’s replacement. He was the closest to getting the film into production having cast Kiersey Clemons and Billy Crudup to play Iris West and Henry Allen, respectively. However, he too would step away due to creative differences. Eventually, the film would pass its production start date without a director, forcing the studio to reschedule the film’s release.

It would be months before the studio would announce that the film would now be known as Flashpoint. While the film got a new title in July 2017, it would go on for months without a director. Sam Raimi, Marc Webb, and Robert Zemeckis would emerge as the frontrunners to direct the film. So the Francis and Goldstein hiring came as a complete surprise.

For those who are unfamiliar with the “Flashpoint” story arc, it follows Flash as he makes the mistake of returning to the past to stop the Reverse Flash, his arch-nemesis, from killing his mother. The event would trigger a temporal ripple effect that would change the entire future. Instead of Bruce Wayne surviving a mugging, he would die, with his parents surviving. Unfortunately, the tragedy would affect them differently, as Thomas Wayne became the Batman, while Martha turned into the Joker. Cyborg would become a government operative. Hal Jordan never met Abin Suir. The Atlanteans and Amazons would forge a shaky alliance against the surface dwellers. And Superman is imprisoned in a cell that is lit by a red sun 24/7.

However, it remains to be seen if WB will follow the source material to the letter. They could use the events as an opportunity to fix some of the mistakes that the DCEU has been suffering since its inception. But what good would that do to some of the other cast members who are still obligated to appear in their own standalone films? Would this change Wonder Woman 2 as well?

We’ll just have to wait and see if we can get answers to those and many other questions. Hopefully, Francis and Goldstein will stick around long enough for the film to actually see its release.
