Disney’s Live-Action ‘Sword In The Stone’ Finds A Director

The Sword In The Stone

It’s been over two years since Walt Disney Studios announced that they would be releasing a live-action adaptation of their animated classic The Sword In The Stone with Game of Thrones writer/producer Brian Cogman hired to work on the screenplay. The original, which is an adaptation of the novel of the same name, was an animated musical comedy.

Now the film has found a director in 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. More on the story below.

The Hollywood Reporter says Fresnadillo is currently in negotiations to direct.

Based on the screenwriter and director’s previous credits, Disney wants to see a darker more mature adaptation. Certainly more so than their previous ones. As aforementioned, Cogman is best known for his work writing and producing Game of Thrones, the hit HBO show which uses medieval elements and has its fair share of showing blood and guts being spilled. Fresnadillo is no stranger to mature films as well. He directed the underrated 28 Weeks Later, the horror sequel to Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later. He also directed the 2011 horror film Intruders, as well as the pilots for USA Network’s Falling Water and CBS’ Salvation.

Released in 1963, The Sword In The Stone is an animated musical comedy that is based on T. H. White‘s 1938 novel of the same name. The book, which began as a standalone novel, was re-purposed as the first story in the author’s Arthurian fantasy collection, “The Once and Future King.” The film was also the final one to be released by Walt Disney before his death. The songs in the film were written and composed by the Sherman Brothers.

But this isn’t the only Arthurian related film that Disney will be releasing. A few weeks ago, it was announced that the studio would be working with Ridley Scott on a film about Merlin. Though, it’s very likely that the two projects are not related considering that both are based on different material despite the fact that they are about the same legends.

Disney’s has found huge success in these live-action adaptations of their animated films. Last year, Beauty and the Beast earned $1.2 billion at the box office worldwide. Which instantly made it one of the top-earning films of 2017. Other films like Maleficent, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book have also been top-earning films that were also live-action adaptations of Disney animated films. So it’s safe to say that the studio will milk this until they no longer have any more animated films to adapt.

No release date for The Sword In The Stone has been set.
