Could Reed Morano Direct A Live-Action ‘Star Wars’ Film?
  |  @   |

For years, fans have been looking for a female director to helm a Star Wars film. It’s a request that mirrors the current environment where gender inequality still plays a role in the industry. Now it looks like Lucasfilm may be close to finding a female director.

Reed Morano, one of the directors of season one of The Handmaid’s Tale, may be tapped to direct a Star Wars film. Check out what she had to say below.

Here is what Morano told THR in a recent interview about her meeting with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy:

“[Kathleen Kennedy is] amazing. We’re talking about adventure movies, and I’m not even remembering that she produced Goonies. Any movie that I put my finger on that I loved when I was growing up was a movie that she produced. Anyway, it was a great meeting. Obviously, I can’t say anything about what else we were talking about.”

So Morano did not say anything about directing a Star Wars film. However, whenever anyone takes a meeting with someone like Kennedy, one would have to assume that the conversation or meeting would be about Star Wars.

But it was how these two met that is actually quite surprising. Morano says her meeting was probably conceived because Kennedy was watching The Handmaid’s Tale. And it must have been an interesting meeting as it’s said to have lasted two hours. Here’s what Morano said about how the meeting came to be:

“I guess she was watching with her daughter and then called people and was like, ‘Who’s this Reed person?’ She probably thought I was a guy because of my name.”

In addition to episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale, Morano’s other credits include I Think We’re Alone Now, Meadowland and The Rhythm Section, which is currently filming. She also directed episodes for Halt and Catch Fire and Billions. Morano is also known for her work in cinematography as well. Her credits include Beyonce’s Lemonade and Kill Your Darlings. So she knows how to shoot a film.

Of course, if Morano ended up directing a Star Wars film, it would be groundbreaking for the franchise, considering that all of the films have been directed by males. With the new trilogy that is being launched by Rian Johnson, and the success of the spinoffs, it would be fun to see a female director take the helm. And if they needed someone with great credits, then Morano fits the bill.

Of course, we will keep you up to date on the news should any new developments emerge.
