Disney Developing More ‘Star Wars’ TV Series For Their Streaming Service
  |  @   |

Following the news that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will be writing and producing a new series of Star Wars films, Disney CEO Bob Iger has announced that Disney will be developing “a few” Star Wars TV series for its own streaming service.

Last November, it was announced that the studio would be launching just one show. Now it appears that more are on the way. However, it’s not clear if these series will be related to the current saga that will conclude with the J.J. Abrams-directed Episode IX, the trilogy that Rian Johnson will be creating, or something completely original and new. More on the story below.

The news comes to us from THR, who says Iger made the confirmation at an earnings meeting, today.

During the meeting, he said that the series will be created specifically for Disney’s streaming service. However, he did not provide any details as to what they could be about or how they are connected. The Disney CEO said he couldn’t give any further details because “the deal isn’t completely closed.” However, it appears that we should be expecting some great things because Disney and Lucasfilm are looking for some incredible talent – on the TV front. Here’s the full quote:

“We are developing not just one, but a few Star Wars series specifically for the Disney direct to consumer app. We’ve mentioned that and we are close to being able to reveal at least one of the interties that is developing that for us. Because the deal isn’t completely closed, we can’t be specific about that. I think you’ll find the level of talent “¦ on the television front will be rather significant as well.”

The streaming site is expected to launch in 2019, and along with the Star Wars TV series, there will also be shows based on the Monsters, Inc. and High School Musical properties.

Of course, one has to wonder why Benioff and Weiss aren’t a part of the few Star Wars TV series that are currently being developed. Iger offered this explanation:

“Their interest was in creating a series of films that are Star Wars-based and we’ve actually been talking to them for a long time. To my knowledge they didn’t express interest in creating a series. They have an idea for number of films and at some later date I’m sure we’ll disclose to all of you just what those are. They are focused on a point in time in the Star Wars mythology and taking it from there.”

So, it makes sense as to why they are making the jump from TV to film. And it’s not like Game of Thrones has the same feel. Each episode runs almost as long as an average theatrical film. But now that one potential showrunner is out, it has us wondering who Disney may be looking at to develop these shows. We’ll keep you posted as soon as more news comes in.
